Job Summary
Responsible for providing legal advice and recommendations for action to executives and management within a variety of business units regarding matters of various complexities (basic to intermediate) which have or may have a sizable dollar impact on business activities and operations.Job Responsibilities
Primarily leverages knowledge of legal specialty in providing counsel as it builds its knowledge of the business context in which it operates.Review and prepare legal documents prior to presentation to management for execution to ensure accurate expression of the legal content.May receive specific direction from management or more senior law professionals as to the outcomes, process and schedules expected.Collaborates with the business units that it serves in order to achieve corporate objectives and mitigate unnecessary business risk.Research legal principles and precedents, engage and manage outside counsel, draft legal documents, gather relevant case related information using multiple sources and methods, provide work guidance to other professional, paraprofessional and support staff in developing solutions to problems presented.Maintain currency and fluency in the legal and business trends that could impact those business units within Walgreens that it serves.Basic Qualifications
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and at least 5 years of post-bar attorney legal work experience in a combination of law firm and corporate settings.Required licensure to practice law in at least one state.Required Illinois bar membership or active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdictionExperience using time management skills such as prioritizing/organizing and tracking details and meeting deadlines of multiple projects with varying completion dates.At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross functional team leadership.Preferred Qualifications
IP Portfolio Management:
Multijurisdictional trademark, patent and design portfolio management, including filing strategy, renewals and cost-benefit exercises to meet budget expectations and ensure continuing portfolio value.Manage invention disclosures, including collecting and screening disclosures, conducting inventor interviews, presenting disclosures at patent committee and/or external counsel review meetings.Supporting copyright protection practices and domain name registration and enforcement initiatives.Strategic IP Development:
Establishing and communicating the intellectual property strategy for trademark, design, patent and copyright clearance, filing, prosecution, enforcement and disputes (proactive and defensive) and advisory work.Conduct IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions.Develop policies and practices that drive a proactive, business-focused intellectual property program.Experience in the retail, health or pharmacy industry a plus.Counseling and Dispute Management:
Serve as the primary point of contact for all IP-related matters within the company.Educate and train employees on IP policies, procedures, and best practices.Experience structuring, negotiating, and drafting IP related agreements and documentation, including licensing, assignments, co-existence agreements, joint development and settlement agreements.Managing trademark oppositions, enforcements and related infringement notices, advising business teams as needed.Assist internal and external litigation counsel on intellectual property disputes and litigation matters.Relationship Management:
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal clients across business units, external IP counsel, legal department colleagues, and industry network/associations.Works independently with confidence yet understands how to coordinate with the rest of the legal team to seamlessly advance corporate strategy.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Operational Excellence:
Stays current with legal developments, best practices and benchmarks in intellectual property law and assist employees in implementing policies and procedures in response.Consistently looks for opportunities to improve on existing methods or processes.Comfortable navigating unfamiliar areas and self-motivated to learn new subject areas or skill.Superior time management skills with ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities.Prior in-house experience is a plus.
