POLICE CHIEF

The City of Newell is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our team as Chief of Police. As the Police Chief, you will be responsible for overseeing all law enforcement activities within our jurisdiction. This is a critical leadership role that requires strong decision- making abilities, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to maintaining public safety. Duties: -Become state certified in accordance with the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and maintain certifications - Enforce all municipal, state, and federal laws * City code enforcement (see code manual) * City traffic laws * State traffic laws - Respond to all medical and fire calls within city limits -Perform basic life support (BSL) including CPR, AED, stop the bleed - Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies on joint operations and investigations -Patrol/work 40 hours/week + on call time when off duty -Maintain certifications as required by ILEA -Assist in planning for annual National Night Out event and other events as required -Work security/law enforcement for all city-wide events including but not limited to Watermelon Days. Includes road closures/traffic-related concerns -Lead parades as requested -Transport lost/loose animals to Lake Animal if owner is not located timely -Unlock vehicles upon request -Investigate all crimes committed within the city limits of Newell and file charges accordingly including thorough/complete reports -Investigate traffic accidents within the city limits of Newell -Assist school with fights/disturbances/security/truancy -Attend all council meetings -Storm spotting when weather dictates -Maintain all weapons and equipment -Maintain patrol vehicle appearance and report any repairs/issues to Mayor -Communicate necessary information to Mayor/council -Maintain/update police department Facebook page to aid in communication to community - Collaborate with community organizations to promote positive relationships between law enforcement and the public -Other duties not listed to ensure community safety and awareness Experience: To be successful in this role, you should have the following qualifications: - Previous experience in law enforcement, preferably in a leadership position - Knowledge of CPR, first aid, and other emergency response procedures - Strong understanding of criminal investigation techniques - Excellent report writing skills - Ability to handle conflict situations effectively - Proficiency in surveillance techniques - Valid driver's license Pay/Benefits: We offer competitive pay starting at $60,000 with a generous benefit package including IPERS retirement, paid vacation/sick/personal leave, 90% employer paid Health/Dental with annual $5,000 deductible reimbursement, and 100% employer-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, and accidental death/dismemberment.

ILEA Certification required, or willing to become certified. City will pay for certification costs upon successful completion and graduation.
