Required Qualification:
(as evidenced by an attached resume) Ph.D (or foreign equivalent) or a M.D./Ph.D. Three (3) years of research experience, to include at least one year of research experience following attainment of a Doctoral degree or foreign equivalent. Prior experience in cryogenics or scanning probe microscopy and in the field of condensed matter is required. Preferred Qualification: At least one first-author paper accepted for publication or published in a peer-reviewed journal by the time of application. Duties: This Research Scientist will assist the Principal Investigator Dr. Mengkun Liu in the department of Physics & Astronomy. The incumbent will develop, design and run research experiments and ensure that all research protocols follow the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The Research Scientist will be responsible for the operations of the lab. The Research Scientist will be responsible for measuring 2D material, chiral material, and superconducting systems such as graphene, FTS, and Bi2212 in a scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM) that works in a cryogenic environment and high magnetic field. This position also requires the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment with team members with a broad range of scientific and technical backgrounds and levels of experience. In addition, this position will involve training and management of undergraduate or graduate students, development of new proposals, and day-to-day management of scientific collaborations. The Research Scientist will be encouraged to lead independent projects resulting in high-impact publications and present at conferences and workshops. Perform research in experimental condensed matter physics in collaboration with the PI. In particular, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the building of a cryogenic s-SNOM and investigate the low-temperature properties of 2D and strongly correlated electron systems such as graphene, HTSC using s-SNOM. The incumbent is expected to be familiar with the main features of the next generation of closed-cycle or continuous-flow optical cryostat and scanning probes. The incumbent will be evaluated for creativity, quantitative skills, and capabilities to clearly present the results of work with scientific papers and seminars. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group. Present results of research at conferences and workshops. Assist PI with the preparation and submission of applications for external research funding, progress reports to sponsors, and publications. Other duties as assigned.
