POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the VP of Youth Development, the Executive Director of Camps/West Mar is responsible for overseeing the development of all operational areas of Association Camps Programming and Camp West Mar. This position will be responsible for recruitment, training and support of all assigned staff delivering the highest level of programming to YMCA members, guests and program participants through experienced, quality, efficient and courteous delivery of services. This position provides leadership to program staff that reflects the mission and goals of the YMCA of Frederick County and collaborates with the VP of Youth Development and peer Directors to establish a coordinated approach to implementing/creating strategic plans and program development/growth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Staff Development:

Work in conjunction with HR to recruit, hire, train and develop personnel and volunteers as needed.

Supervise and schedule staff team as needed.

Develop performance standards for all direct reports, conduct annual performance reviews.

Core Department Areas of Responsibility:

Creates and recommends objectives for all Camp programs, including Camp West Mar and exercises appropriate action to assure the achievement of these objectives.

Directly manage all programming efforts to support growth and retention of participants.

Must maintain a healthy relationship with key departments that help to support camp operations (e.g., Facilities, Marketing, Aquatics, etc.).

Serves as a leader of customer-focused camping operations. Provides exemplary leadership in camper recruitment, service, and superior retention efforts.

Develops and maintains contacts in the community with business and civic leaders, interpreting the work of Day Camps, soliciting their interest and support, and enlarging the scope of services.

Ensures camp operations comply with all governmental requirements and meet and exceed standards.

Develops and initiates grant requests to augment program offerings.

Actively pursues collaborative relationships with agencies, municipalities, and school systems to enhance programming.

Participates in board committees and meetings as agreed upon with CEO & the VP of Youth Development.

Assures own professional growth through reading, study, conference attending, etc.

Participates in Association-wide assignments and special responsibilities.

Budget and Financial Development:

Assist with financial development activities specifically the annual campaign.

Responsible for carrying out the Day Camp master plan, with capital fundraising efforts to reach goal.

Administers the budget and exercises necessary controls to assure operations are maintained within the approved budget. When necessary, carries out adjustments in operations to assure a surplus from operations.

Develop, manage and review departmental budgets related to the operation of Day Camps.

Facility Management:

Ensure management, safety, and maintenance of the facility and equipment.

Plans for and supervises the upkeep of the buildings, grounds, equipment and facility working in conjunction with the VP of Facilities.

Strategic Planning:

Assists with strategic planning efforts and development of the annual operating plan.

Serve as directed on association task forces or committees.

Administration:

Perform quality work within given deadlines and expectations with or without direct supervision.

Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other appropriate individuals.

Gather data and reports as required for assigned program areas.

Ensure branding, communication and marketing meet Association standards for all responsible programs.

Ensure that all program course information is prepared for inclusion into the database/operating system.

Responsible for all administrative paperwork and records for program reporting.

Risk Management:

Assure compliance with state and local regulations. Ensure that program standards, emergency action plans and other safety protocols are met and safety procedures are followed.

Making sure YMCA policies and procedures are adhered to both by self and within areas of responsibility.

Ensures all program operations are consistent with association procedures, including insurance, accidents, purchasing, personnel, and accounting system.

Program Team:

Interact professionally with other employees, members, program participants, volunteers, and other individuals within the community, always being mindful of the YMCA's mission, vision and values.

Serve effectively as a team leader/contributor on all assignments.

Oversee and support various YMCA special events.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in related field required, Master's degree in Sports Management or Recreation/Leisure preferred.

Minimum of two years of experience managing staff.

Knowledge of Day & Residential camp operations, instructional practice, group/program creation and facilitation, budget and fiscal management.

Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Strong communication, networking and collaboration skills.

Excellent team builder and team player, ability to work in a self-directed fashion.

Strong interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills, capable of working effectively with board members, staff members and volunteers.

Passionate belief in the Y's cause and ability to represent the Y in a professional manner.
