OverviewThe New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. NYPL’s neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island—many of which date to Andrew Carnegie’s visionary philanthropy at the turn of the 20th century—are being transformed into true centers of educational innovation and service, and vital community hubs that provide far more than just free books and materials.NYPL is seeking a Porter to maintain an environment that is clean, safe, and comfortable for our Library users and employees.Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of Operations Supervisor and/or Building Manager, the Porter:Cleans all assigned areas in, around, and outside NYPL buildingsSweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors, vacuums, and shampoos carpetsDusts furniture, book shelves, and equipmentHandles snow removalTransports trash or discarded materials to disposal area and pushes dumpsters to and from the curb for garbage and/or recycling collectionMoves, removes, and/or sets up furniture inside specified rooms for special functions as directedMay be assigned to any NYPL buildingPerforms related duties as requiredRequired Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & CertificationsHigh School Diploma or GED and prior custodial experienceRequired ExperienceKnowledge of methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in janitorial work; and safety practices in janitorial workProblem-solve maintenance issues as they ariseRequired SkillsKnowledge of hazards and applicable safety rules by understanding Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and chemical mixing instructions to prevent injuriesAbility to follow oral and written instructionsAbility to interact with others in a courteous and professional mannerHeavy lifting may be requiredMust pass physical examinationCore Values
