As we work to weave diversity, equity, and inclusion into our work and foster a sense of belonging throughout the company and within our communities, we constantly ask ourselves: What is our impact on the world?Job DescriptionHDR is seeking a qualified, motivated Senior Architectural Historian to join our growing Cultural Resources practice and lead projects requiring due diligence and Section 106 compliance throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, and HDR projects throughout the United States. The primary duty of this position is to serve as a subject matter expert regarding architectural history and cultural resources compliance for projects that have federal involvement. This position provides technical expertise to support the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended, and its implementing regulations at 36 CFR Part 800, and related cultural resources regulations, including Section 4(f), NEPA, and state and local regulations. This work supports clients with cultural resource management compliance activities for a variety of projects, including road, rail, transit, military, power, renewable energy, etc. This work may include leading and planning fieldwork and teams, working on and managing larger or complex cultural resources projects, completing technical reviews of deliverables, developing proposals and schedules, developing mitigation plans and agreement documents, and actively participating in consultation efforts with the lead federal agency, Tribes, the State Historic Preservation Officer, and other consulting parties.This is a full-time position with generous benefits and can be located in the following HDR office(s): Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati.Primary ResponsibilitiesIn the role of Senior Architectural Historian, we'll count on you to:Lead Section 106 compliance activities for project sponsors on behalf of federal agencies, participate in Section 106 consultation meetings, and develop compliance strategy for a variety of projects.Provide strategic Section 106 support and guidance for complex cultural resources projects.Manage and take responsibility for preparation of reports and recommendations, NRHP evaluations, assessments of effects on historic properties, recommendations for avoidance of adverse effects, and draft agreement documents and mitigation plans.Serve as Project Manager on larger cultural resources projects as needed, but project management is not sole focus of position; where necessary, develop plans and approaches to optimize efficiency.Develop and monitor tasks, schedules and cost estimates, and assess applicable requirements and processes for cultural resource projects.Coordinate with environmental staff, engineers, architects, and others to develop design strategies that avoid impacts to historic properties and conform with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.Plan, organize and supervise work of medium to large staff of cultural resources professionals and technicians as needed.Take part in all phases of cultural resources projects, including field investigations, attendance at consultation meetings, and agency coordination.Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in an area of specialization that resolves problems of greater scope and complexity as needed.Conduct field work as needed, participate in meetings, and develop compliance strategies.Coordinate and consult with state/federal agencies, Indian Tribes, and appropriate State Historic Preservation Officers.Travel to project locations, predominantly in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, although additional nationwide travel may be requested as needed.Perform other duties as needed.Preferred QualificationsMaster's Degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or closely related field.A minimum of 10 years of cultural resources experience with a minimum of 5 years experience in planning, managing and executing cultural resources investigations.Willingness to work in and facilitate a productive team environment.Excellent oral and written communication as well as client interaction skills.Strong leadership and supervision abilities, including problem solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making.Proven ability to successfully manage multiple projects, scopes, schedules and budgets at the same time.Proven proposal development and client management skills.Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and analytical skills.Team player with strong ability take initiative and solve problems using sound judgment.Demonstrated experience with the regulatory framework surrounding cultural resource management (i.e., Section 106, Section 4(f), and NEPA).Requires ability to travel.Proficient in MS Office.A demonstrated commitment to safety and quality.Successful candidates must meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History or History.Strong organizational and time management skills, and demonstrated experience working simultaneously on multiple projects with competing schedules and priorities; able to set and follow through on priorities.Ability to maintain various directions of internal/external project communication for multiple projects.Demonstrated experience providing technical support to colleagues, clients, and local/state/federal agencies.Demonstrated experience interacting with SHPOs, federal agencies, and consulting parties and successfully leading Section 106 consultation process.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or closely related field.Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.Self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills.Willingness to work under varied weather conditions.Successful candidates must be familiar with field study design and documentation, regulatory framework for cultural resource management, and GIS utilities.An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.What We BelieveHDR is our company.
