About Houston-Galveston Area Council
The Houston-Galveston Area Council is one of the largest regional planning commissions in the country with a diverse service area of 13 counties and more than 7 million people. We are the pulse of our region addressing issues that cross city limits and county lines every single day.

What will I be doing?
Develop, promote, implement, and monitor our regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy which promotes regional collaboration, economic development funding, and business attraction, retention, and expansion efforts across the region.
Work closely with local governments, businesses, and community stakeholders to identify economic development needs and opportunities.
Oversee and manage key economic development projects from conception to completion, ensuring they meet project goals, timelines, and budgetary constraints.
Conduct economic research, data analysis, and feasibility studies to inform planning decisions, and prepare detailed reports and presentations for internal and external audiences.
Contribute to the development of economic policies and programs that support sustainable growth and improve the economic vitality of the community.
Identify funding opportunities and prepare grant applications to support economic development initiatives, managing the grants through to completion.
Build and maintain strong relationships with public and private sector partners, including developers, businesses, industry associations, investors, and government agencies.
Provide expert advice to senior management, elected officials, and other stakeholders on economic development matters.
Key Qualifications
A minimum of 5 years of experience in economic development, urban planning, or a related field, with a proven track record of successfully managing complex projects.
Ability to develop and implement long-term economic development strategies that align with regional goals.
Strong ability to analyze economic data, trends, and market conditions to inform planning and policy decisions.
Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage budgets effectively.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to a variety of audiences.
Proven leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor and guide junior staff.
Proficiency in economic modeling software, GIS applications, and other planning tools, as well as standard office applications.
Do you have…
Bachelor’s degree in an applicable academic discipline or related field of study.
5 years of experience working with local government, nonprofit programs, school or in job related duties.
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree in Urban Planning, Economics, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred.
At least 8 years of experience in economic development, urban planning, or a related field, with a proven track record of successfully managing complex projects.
Certification from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or similar is highly desirable.
Expertise in specific areas such as economic development incentives and tools, land use planning, transportation planning, or workforce development is a plus.
Experience in successfully securing and managing grants for economic development projects.
In-depth understanding of local, state, and federal economic development policies and regulations.
Established connections with key industry stakeholders, government agencies, and community organizations.
