Employees are provided in-depth training and access to state-of-the-art tools necessary to do their jobs, as well as development and growth opportunities.The JobThe Associate General Counsel is responsible for drafting, negotiating, and reviewing provider contracts and giving advice and counsel on healthcare regulatory issues related to the operations of a Medicare Advantage health plan and the delivery of health care services. The work is varied and complex, requiring a high degree of discretion, flexibility, and independent judgment, and is done with the highest level of ethics and integrity.The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator, an enthusiastic and curious learner, and can work autonomously on a variety of assignments and projects in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. The Associate General Counsel should possess a strong drive for excellence, attention to detail, an ability to adapt to change, and a “can do” positive attitude. The position requires strong contracting experience and a general health law background.The position is hybrid, with some on-site days per week (currently Tuesdays and Wednesdays) at SCAN’s headquarters in Long Beach, California.You WillDrafts, reviews, advises, and negotiates a broad range of provider network contracts (hospital, primary care, specialist, ancillary providers, telehealth providers, etc.).Provides advice and assistance to SCAN’s Compliance Department in drafting and responding to filings or inquiries from regulators (e.g., U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office for Civil Rights, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, California Department of Managed Health Care, and California Department of Health Care Services), and in ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory, contractual and other requirements.Conducts legal research and provides analysis on state and federal laws pertaining to health plans, medical groups, managed care, provider contracting.Acts independently to provide well-informed and timely legal advice on a variety of complex and sensitive healthcare matters.Monitors and researches market and industry trends of interest to the organization in connection with its business activities. Anticipate changes impacting operations, notifies management and recommend preparatory actions.Works collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders throughout the organization to develop and maintain strong relationships with SCAN business units and affiliates.Actively supports the achievement of SCAN’s Vision and Goals.Other duties as assigned.Your QualificationsLaw Degree from an ABA accredited law school required.Minimum 8 years of relevant legal experience in a reputable law firm and/or established health care company legal department.Extensive experience negotiating, drafting, and interpreting healthcare agreements.Expertise providing managed care legal advice to health plans and/or providers.Knowledge of federal and state healthcare law related to managed care, Medicare Advantage, HIPAA, Fraud Waste and Abuse (e.g., Stark, Anti-Kickback Statute).Strong organizational skills; ability to multitask.Ability to appropriately maintain confidentiality.Strong analytical and critical thinking skills required.Personal presence and the professional demeanor needed to work with all levels of individuals throughout the organization.The ability to collaborate as team player and to adapt to change, master new skills, and assume additional responsibilities as needed.Practical and business oriented with the sound judgment and the ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment. Able to balance competing priorities.Hardworking with a "roll up your sleeves" attitude.
