The GI Division at Massachusetts General Hospital is looking for a nurse practitioner or physician assistant (advanced practice provider or "APP") to join our inpatient Hepatology Team. This role will start with exclusive inpatient hepatology responsibilities and focus on caring for the hospitalized patients with a variety of liver conditions, including end stage liver disease and our transplant population.

The APP will provide consultative, and continuity follow up care for patients admitted to the Inpatient Liver Service and document care in Epic medical record along with billing for care provided. The APP will facilitate access for the Inpatient Liver Service in collaboration with the attending physician, fellows, and access nurse.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

* Will work closely with the Hepatology leadership, attending physicians, fellow, APPs, nurses and the entire hepatology team.* Manage consultation and follow up patients independently and in collaboration with the attending physician and fellows on the Inpatient Liver Service* Perform patient histories, physical exams, order labs/imaging and document in the EPIC medical record. Discuss findings with the attending physician.* In collaboration with the attending physician and Hepatology/Transplant Nurse Coordinator, will facilitate and coordinate admissions and transfers to the Liver Service from the ED, outpatient clinic or outside hospital as needed.* Coordinates patient care among GI Surgery, Interventional Radiology, GI Oncology, GI Endoscopy Unit, and floor teams including interns, residents, APPs, and medical students along with inpatient nursing.* When on the liver transplant service, attends care related meetings including ICU huddles and weekly liver transplant committee listing meeting.* Assists with providing specific discharge instructions pertaining to liver management and care to the inpatient discharging team.* Ensures patient has follow-up in the outpatient hepatology clinic post discharge, for patients followed longitudinally by our team. As needed may take on a once weekly post-discharge clinic to help bridge the inpatient to outpatient transition for patient recently hospitalized.* Identifies and resolves any quality gaps in care delivery and other care delivery problems and makes recommendations to improve and streamline services.* May participate in the development of formal and informal educational programs for the Inpatient Liver Service

Educational/Departmental Responsibilities

* Acts as a resource to other care providers with questions about patients admitted to the Inpatient Liver Service.* Assists with patient recruitment for clinical research.* Participates as requested in MGH and Mass General Brigham quality initiatives.* Participates in various hospital and system committees as assigned.* Attends internal (e.g GI Grand Rounds) and external education meetings and reads appropriate professional journals to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence. Is encouraged to advance their medical and technical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.* Maintains CME requirements for licensure/renewal and board re-certification.

Qualifications/Requirements

* Master's degree (nurse practitioner; physician assistant) from an accredited university.* Attain and maintain board certification by appropriate NP or PA organization.* Maintain requirements for DEA and MCSR licensure/renewal.* 2 years' experience as an APP is desired. Applicants with GI/Liver experience (inpatient or outpatient) preferred. Willing to consider new grads.

* Time Management: exceptional organizational skills and ability to prioritize effectively and complete tasks; flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures.* Interpersonal/communication: excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and public speaking skills; excellent command of English language, including medical and scientific terminology.* Information Systems/Technology Skills: computer skills (including operating systems, word processing, electronic mail, Internet, and other office management systems).* EPIC experience is a plus.* Quality Assurance: skills to work efficiently and optimally and strive to do so in all aspects of position; attention to detail.* Critical Thinking/Decision Making: ability to appropriately evaluate all aspects of a situation and to independently make appropriate and timely decisions.* Discretion and Confidentiality: ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters discreetly and to ensure confidentiality guidelines are maintained by staff.* Safety/Compliance: knowledge in aspects of patient safety applicable to position; knowledge of and compliance with institutional, JCAHO, HIPAA, and other regulatory bodies' standards.
