Position Highlights
The University of Arizona (UA) College of Medicine - Tucson (COM-T) seeks an innovative academic anesthesiologist to serve as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology (Department). Reporting directly to the UA COM-T Dean, the Chair will work collaboratively with the leaders of COM-T and Banner University Medicine to build upon excellence in existing clinical, teaching, and team-based research programs to position the Department for growth and transformation.
An opportunity exists to grow and leverage the outstanding NIH and the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System strategic investments that exist within the Department for acute and chronic pain research. UA is home to the Comprehensive Center for Pain & Addiction (CCPA). CCPA is unique with a focus on all aspects of pain and addition, including clinical care, education, research, clinical trials, neonatal abstinence syndrome, medication-assisted training, legislations, and technology to improve health outcomes. The CCPA expansion across the State of Arizona is a unique opportunity for growth of the Department.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding clinical and academic leader with a national/international reputation as a respected and accomplished academic anesthesiologist, and will have proven, substantial, and progressive leadership achievements. They will have a passion and proven track record for growing programs, building relationships with both UA COM-T and community-based providers, and possessing a desire to build systems and processes to maximize efficiency.
The next Chair of the Department will have the opportunity to enhance the general and subspecialty clinical offerings of the Department by providing continuum of services, with opportunities to enhance collaborative programs with another 16 clinical departments, 5 basic science departments, and a multitude of centers and institutes.

Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe Chair will provide strategic leadership and direction for the growth of both clinical and academic activities of the Department within the larger context of a growing academic medical center, by leveraging and further developing strengths, and expanding the Banner University of Arizona footprint. The Chair will set a clear vision, recruit, retain, inspire, and engage faculty, mentor trainees, and help guide the careers of the faculty. This includes holding those parties accountable to agreed-upon objectives, creating a collaborative environment conducive to camaraderie, excellent clinical care, research, education, and service, while driving results. The Chair will expand existing relationships and partnerships with community providers.As the Chief Academic and Executive Officer for the Department of Anesthesiology, and in conjunction with our affiliated clinical partners, the Chair will provide leadership across the Department's tripartite mission (education and training, research, and patient care), consistent with COM-T's strategic plan, which includes other mission areas (faculty affairs, access, community and belonging, financial sustainability, development, and brand communication). The Chair will serve as a "coach-player" and mentor to faculty and trainees, ensuring the highest quality of clinical services and programs in the context of an academic medical center focused on advancing science and the field of Anesthesiology across disciplines.
Minimum QualificationsCandidates for the position will hold MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent medical degree, will be board certified in Anesthesiology, and eligible for licensure in Arizona.Must meet the University of Arizona criteria for appointment to a tenure track senior-level faculty position.Proven and substantial leadership experience in administrative positions in an academic medical setting, involvement in academic and professional societies at a national level, and a proven track record of collaboration across clinical and/or academic disciplines, including but not limited to research initiatives, faculty affairs, operations, key hospital interactions, graduate and undergraduate education, and fundraising.
