The City of Berkeley invites applications for Deputy City Attorney III! This classification performs civil legal work of a very complex nature and represents the City by providing advice and counsel to City staff and Boards and Commissions. Incumbents provide comprehensive legal services including drafting administrative rules and regulations, preparing opinions on questions of law and procedure, drafting administrative documents and contracts, and representing the City in administrative hearings, and before state and federal courts.

Positions at this level provide legal services for a City department, board, or commission in a distinct area of law. The City Attorney's Office is routinely involved in exciting litigation over issues of national interest, such as climate change, surveillance technology, and homelessness.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this classification is: Equivalent to graduation from a college or university with an appropriate law degree and four (4) years of experience as an attorney engaged in the practice of civil law, preferably in a municipal setting.

Must be a current member of the California State Bar Association. Must be willing to attend evening meetings.

Specified positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
