PRN Public Health Nurse II - School Health

Hours: PRN: as needed during hours of nurse vacancies. PRN nurses are required to work a minimum of 8 hours per month to remain an active CHA employee
The PRN nurse will complete special assignments delegated by the school health administrators, assist school nurses in meeting the needs of their school community and act as a substitute school nurse. The nurse assigned to fill-in at a school will function independently and must demonstrate autonomy in decision-making and practice. The school nurse will temporarily assume the role of provider of student health care and planner/coordinator of the school health program at the assigned school.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Provide illness and injury assessments, interventions, and follow-up * Serve as liaison between school, home and communities (referrals to parents, school staff and community) * Provide ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school staff, and health agencies * Train staff and supervise activities related to the management of student health needs * Maintain, evaluate and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate needs of students and the school community (document, compile, and analyze program data for required reports) * Administer medications, treatment plans, and/or specialized healthcare procedures per medical provider's orders (maintain accurate documentation and records and ensure secure storage of medications)
Education/Experience: BSN: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. degree in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation; or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an associate degree program for nursing. ADN prepared nurses must complete the NC Credentialed Public Health Nurse Program within 12 months of employment.
License: Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Current CPR certification. Experience in school nursing, pediatrics, emergency department or home health preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
* General knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs * Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health * Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to healthcare * Knowledge of available resources and organizations * Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions * Possess ability to secure cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information and maintain effective working relationships * Accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions
