Simon & Schuster is seeking a detail-oriented and highly analytical Royalty Analyst to join our accounting department in Parsippany, NJ. The Royalty Analyst will be responsible for managing, processing, and reporting on royalty payments to authors, and other stakeholders. This individual will ensure accurate and timely royalty calculations, statements, and disbursements.
The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of royalty structures, excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to work with large data sets. An interest in book publishing is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
Royalty Calculation & Processing:
Review and process royalty data from sales reports, digital platforms, and third-party licensors.
Perform detailed calculations to ensure accurate royalty distribution for authors, artists, and other rights holders.
Maintain and update royalty rates, contracts, and other relevant information in the company’s royalty system.
Royalty Reporting & Reconciliation:
Prepare royalty statements and reports for authors, publishers, and other stakeholders in compliance with contract terms.
Reconcile sales and royalty data with accounting records to ensure consistency and accuracy.
Resolve discrepancies between sales, payments, and royalty statements by investigating and coordinating with internal and external parties.
Data Management:
Organize and maintain royalty records, contracts, and other financial documents.
Update royalty tracking systems to reflect new releases, licenses, and contract changes.
Ensure that all royalty-related data is accurate, up-to-date, and accessible for auditing purposes.
Communication & Customer Service:
Respond to inquiries from authors, agents, and other rights holders regarding royalty statements and payments.
Provide clear explanations of royalty calculations and address any concerns or discrepancies.
Collaborate with other departments such as legal, licensing, and accounting to ensure smooth operations.
Compliance & Reporting:
Assist with audits by providing necessary data and documentation for internal and external auditors.
Ensure compliance with relevant industry regulations, copyright laws, and contractual obligations related to royalty management.
Process Improvement:
Identify opportunities to streamline and improve royalty processing systems and workflows.
Work with cross-functional teams to implement best practices and increase efficiency in royalty tracking and reporting.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
Additional certification in royalty management or publishing (e.g., PRS, BMI, ASCAP) is a plus.
Experience:
0-2 years of experience in royalty analysis, financial analysis, or a related field.
Familiarity with royalty systems, databases, and financial software (e.g., SAP, Excel, custom royalty management tools).
Skills:
Strong analytical skills with the ability to work with large sets of data.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in handling financial information.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, formulas).
Ability to communicate complex information clearly and professionally, both written and verbally.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Personal Attributes:
High level of integrity and trustworthiness.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage deadlines.
Team player with a collaborative and proactive approach to problem-solving.
