The occupational therapist is responsible for student assessment, goal development, planning and providing intervention services designed to enhance student learning. The therapist assists students in acquiring functional performance skills needed to participate in and benefit from the educational environment and to help the student function independently.

Assess and identify difficulties of referred students with suspected disabilities through non-discriminatory, diagnostic proceduresPlan, develop, implement and evaluate therapeutic intervention goals that are educationally relevant and connected to the students' educational programCommunicate and interpret results of assessments, evaluations and reports of occupational therapy services to the educational staff, parents, students, and when appropriate, other professionals and agencies concerned with the studentsAssist students in the transfer of newly acquired skills to the classroom and home by working with students, their teachers, and parents in a supportive and collaborative mannerMonitor the occupational therapy program goals by collaborating with other professionals and paraprofessionals who are involved with the implementation of the intervention proceduresParticipate as a team member in the transitioning of students into and out of educational and/or therapy programsProvide reassessments of students focusing on areas of need at intervals determined to be educationally relevantCommunicate the needs of the occupational therapy program to the appropriate school/program administratorActs as resource person for classroom teachers regarding strategies, adaptations, and resource materialsProvide consultation to the school system regarding student needs, professional needs, and system needs in order for the system to achieve its goals and objectivesMaintain accurate and complete student records; prepare and submit all required reportsMaintain an inventory list of equipment; accountable for proper care and use of therapy equipmentSupervise and monitor in a professional manner the job performance of any assigned occupational therapy assistants and aidesADDITIONAL DUTIES
Facilitate in-service education and professional development for teachers, parents, related service/occupational therapy assistants and aides and other school staff; consult with the professional staff of the school system on the development of appropriate in-service training programs for teachers and staffParticipate in IEP meetings upon request.Participates in school IAT meetings upon requestCooperate with appropriate community agencies, resources, and facilities concerned with students with disabilitiesRefer students who require specialized technologies to appropriate resources and community agenciesParticipate in the development of programs and researchParticipate in University Student Intern Training ProgramsSeek opportunities to improve skills and grow professionally; attend all required meetings and in-services.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
