About the Department
Founded in 1890 by John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago is one of the world’s leading universities, known for its research eminence, excellent faculty, and diverse student body. The Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) provides advice and services to University officials on a broad set of legal issues associated with the University’s activities.
Job Information
Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the President, the General Counsel (GC) assists in supporting the University’s teaching and learning, research, and engagement goals and has overall responsibility for the vision, leadership, and execution of the university’s legal strategy. The General Counsel oversees all of the University’s legal affairs and directs its Office of Legal Counsel. The GC serves as a key strategic adviser to the President and is responsible for enabling partnerships that position the University as a partner of choice.
Responsibilities:
Advise the President, University Trustees, and other senior administrators on legal issues.
Provide in-house legal services, including judicial and administrative litigation, corporate partnerships, and intellectual property issues.
Generate plans to achieve University goals while simplifying processes.
Manage contract and legal matters involving the University’s contract operations.
Advise international affiliates on global legal affairs.
Coordinate the development of University policies with key business leaders.
Maintain relationships and manage outside counsel.
Oversee the finances and budget for legal matters.
Support Board of Trustee committees and related governance matters.
Identify potential legal issues and develop risk mitigation strategies.

Education, Experience, or Certifications:
J.D. or other advanced degree required.
Extensive legal expertise and senior leadership experience required.
Significant experience leading legal matters in complex enterprises required.
Understanding of government contracts required.
Record of successful legal outcomes required.
Experience serving as a strategic advisor to executive leadership preferred.
Experience managing complex budgets preferred.
Experience working with stakeholders across various sectors preferred.
Experience attracting and retaining top legal talent required.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed to practice law in Illinois or in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
