Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools (OWNCS) educates students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners. Our educational philosophy is based on inquiry, active and experiential learning, and social justice. We are committed to providing strong educational opportunities for children in underserved communities and believe in the importance of creating socio-economically and culturally diverse schools.
The network of schools includes three schools on four different campuses located in Astoria, Long Island City, Corona, and Howard Beach. The first school opened its doors in 2002. All three schools are authorized by the State University of New York, Charter Schools Institute and are in various stages of authorization as International Baccalaureate World Schools.
Position
Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools seeks to immediately fill the Director of Finance position. This leadership role will be a thought-partner who collaborates with and reports to CEO to assure that the schools' vision, culture, mission and future goals are met. The successful candidate will be a hands-on and participative manager who will lead and develop an internal team to support the schools' fiscal management, business planning and budgeting needs.
The ideal candidate is organized, optimistic, and diplomatic, with strong interpersonal skills and is a strong communicator (written and orally). The successful candidate will have a proven track record and experience in accounting, budgeting, contract, grants, and risk management, and compliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Work with the CEO and Board of Trustees to ensure the financial integrity of the OWNCS Education Corporation by overseeing and managing all financial functions of the organization
Manage day-to-day financial tasks including, but not limited to AR/AP, journal entries, deposits, etc.
Lead and oversee the annual budgeting and planning process with the CEO; review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization's financial status
Manage grant allocations, compliance, and financial reporting requirements
Serve as a point person for the Board of Trustees Treasurer and Finance Committee
Establish and maintain a purchasing system that satisfies the requirements for procurement of goods and services
Establish and maintain a system of controls over cash receipts, deposits, disbursement, and investments
Establish a system of internal controls for financial operations sufficient to provide reasonable, but not absolute, assurance that accounts are properly stated
Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner to CEO, state agencies, and Board of Trustees
Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the Board of Trustees
Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the Board of Trustees
Implement a robust contracts management and financial management/reporting system
Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting

Required Qualifications
Minimum of a B.A. in Accounting, Finance, or other related fields. Ideally an MBA
Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or Certified Financial Planner (CFP), or Certified Financial Analyst (CFA)
5+ Years of experience working in accounting, finance or related area, preferably in a nonprofit or educational environment
Mastery of GAAP
Supervisory Experience
The ability to travel to each school location (Astoria, Howard Beach, and Corona)
