Job Summary

A restaurant operator’s dream job!

A degree is not required. Experience is entirely equivalent (see qualifications).

No evenings, no weekends. Monday – Friday day job in an excellent work environment.

Basic culinary skills required, with an emphasis on operations. Timing, scheduling, speedy service and problem solving are a constant focus. Cleanliness and organization are a must.

The UMFA Café Manager reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for the overall business operations of the Museum Café. The manager oversees staffing, training, ordering, food preparation, fiscal management, inventory control and analysis of financial reports.

Utah Food Handler and Serv Safe permits are both required ( UMFA will underwrite the cost of these permits).

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is located on the campus of the University of Utah and offers visitors the opportunity to explore over 5,000 years of human creativity with a collection of over 20,000 objects and art works from classic Greek and Roman antiquities to cutting-edge, contemporary art. Founded in 1914, the UMFA is the state of Utah’s art museum, creating exhibitions and programs that serve a wide array of audiences. The UMFA is housed in the award-winning Marcia and John Price Museum Building.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate firm adherence to the food service rules and guidelines outlined by the Health Department and its inspectors

Ensure visible, high levels of cleanliness, organization and personal hygiene

In-depth knowledge of responsibilities related to front of house, barista and kitchen operations

Hire and train staff

Complex scheduling, usually involving several class schedules

Review and approve weekly time and attendance and bimonthly payroll reporting

Develop and maintain relationships with vendors

Place weekly orders with vendors

Maintain inventory levels according to daily business and storage availability

Create themed entrees and dishes

Facilitate interactions between and among employees, customers, and management while maintaining a professional environment

Develop lasting rapport with patrons

Cooperate with the Museum staff by attending necessary meetings and preparing for upcoming events and exhibitions

Provide financial oversight to the Café / Responsible for meeting revenue and income goals

See that the Cafe is run according to the mission of the Museum

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Five years of experience in a related field, with two of those years working as a supervisor, or equivalency; knowledge of related trade or department specific equipment, systems and procedures

Demonstrated organizational, human relations and effective communication skills
