The Department of Emergency Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Study Coordinator 1 (“RSC1”) to participate in clinical research at Harborview Medical Center (HMC). The primary study involves the prospective enrollment of emergency department patients in observational and interventional clinical investigations. The RSC1 will also participate in other current and future studies that enroll emergency department patients.

This RSC role provides a unique opportunity for individuals interested in the medical sciences to gain experience in the field of Emergency Medicine (EM). These positions will require the RSC1 to interact extensively in HMC Emergency Department, including physicians, nurses and patients. These roles will work under the general direction of Principal Investigators and the Research Operations Manager in the Department of Emergency Medicine with assistance from the research team at HMC.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Activities (100%)

· Accurately screen, recruit and enroll study subjects from Emergency Department and hospital units following all federal and institutional regulatory guidelines. · Collect and maintain clinical information from multiple sources into research charts and study binders and input into databases. · Carry out randomization procedures and ensure the adherence to study protocols for study participants. · Serve as primary contact with laboratory personnel. · Extract technical, medical and/or behavioral information from clinical records of research subjects and enter clinical data from on-going emergency medicine research projects. · Assist in developing and modifying data collection forms. · Survey and summarize relevant literature. · Assist with electronic data management and ensuring HIPAA compliance. · Maintain confidentiality of subject records. · Track and participate in retention of research subjects both in-patient and out-patient. Perform follow-up assessments. · Independently track and process research subject bio-specimen samples following study specific guidelines for storage and/or shipping. Serve as main courier for all study specimens. · Assist with the organization of data for publications, annual reports, and formal presentations. Use software applications (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) to create figures and graphs as needed. · Serve as a liaison between study sponsor and other participating sites and attend on-line meetings regularly for each study. · Participate in consent, regulatory, IRB, CRBB, and billing practices for study start-up and maintenance. · Competitive candidates will be detail-oriented, conscientious, and able to complete diverse types of tasks, and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people. · May work with other research staff to provide training and guidance on study protocols

Requirements include:

· Two years of college level course work in a relevant academic area

· AND two years of experience performing work in support of clinical, biomedical, or behavioral research studies involving human subject OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements include:

· Must be willing to work weekends and evenings

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

· Basic lab skills in human specimen processing including centrifuge and aliquot, etc. · Experience working within the SIREN network of studies · Experience on a research team. · Previous human subjects interaction (e.g., recruiting or consenting patients, conducting study-related interviews or assessments). · Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and SPSS. · Clinical experience interacting with patients. · Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to manage competing priorities and monitor/communicate project status. · Excellent written and verbal communication skills · Ability to navigate fast-paced environments
