Job Description Summary The Patterson Family Foundation is a private, family-led foundation dedicated to helping rural communities thrive. The Foundation seeks an experienced business intelligence director to lead the development, implementation, and management of the Foundation's mission-based data and insights strategy. The Director will have a unique opportunity to develop short-term and long-term capabilities that contribute to a deeper understanding of what helps rural communities thrive.

This role involves leading and managing the selection, collection, analysis, and data reporting to support decision-making for a grantmaking foundation. It requires a strong commitment to identifying key trends and insights that can inform the Foundation's grantmaking in rural communities. The Director will work closely with senior leadership to identify and prioritize initiatives and ensure data-driven decision-making aligns with the Foundation's strategic goals. The Director will report to the Foundation's VP of Programs and Strategy.

Job Description

Essential Functions

Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive business intelligence strategy that aligns with the Foundation's rural-serving mission. Competently lead the selection, refinement, and analysis of strategically useful data sources from the wide world of public, purchased, internal, and survey-based data-with a special focus on data with predictive power. Collaborate with senior leadership and Board advisors to clarify philanthropic use cases and identify key needs and opportunities. Provide strategic direction and oversight for all business intelligence activities, including identifying relevant tools, public and private data sources, data ingestion methods, analysis techniques, and reporting methods. Data Management:

Oversee the management and governance of data across the organization. Identify and eliminate redundant measures, and commit to finding more sensitive and specific measures over time. Ensure the integrity, accuracy, security, and longevity of data assets. Develop and implement data policies and procedures to ensure long-term usefulness and compliance with relevant regulations. Analytics and Reporting:

Lead the design, development, and maintenance of data models, dashboards, and metrics pertaining to rural communities. Lead short-term data analysis projects focused on enhancing the team's understanding of one particular aspect of rural community life. Ensure timely and accurate delivery of business intelligence reports and insights to stakeholders. Lead the development of survey instruments that utilize methods from the social sciences. Utilize advanced analytics techniques to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for community improvement through philanthropic engagement and related grantmaking programs. Team Leadership:

Build and lead a small, high-performing team focused on business intelligence analysis, development, and desk research. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration within the team. Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for team members. Stakeholder Collaboration:

Act as a liaison between the business intelligence team and other departments to ensure alignment and integration of data initiatives. Work with cross-functional teams to understand their data needs and provide actionable insights. Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership and other stakeholders. Technology and Tools:

Evaluate and implement business intelligence tools and technologies that support the organization's needs Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in business intelligence and analytics. Ensure the effective use of business intelligence software and platforms. Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Math, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field or 10+ years of equivalent working experience. Master's degree preferred. Experience:

Minimum of 7-10 years of complex data solutions work in business intelligence, research analytics, data analytics, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years designing end-to-end solutions to complex data analysis problems, including data platforms, knowledge management, information architecture, data governance, and related best practices. Proven track record of leading and managing a team of business intelligence developers and analysts Demonstrated history of collaborating with executive stakeholders through all phases of developing and executing a custom data and insights strategy. Professional experience with data governance, data management, data analytics, and geospatial analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Tableau, Power BI, ArcGIS, etc.). Training and familiarity with concepts and research/survey methods from medicine or the social sciences are desirable but not mandatory. Specific professional experience involving selecting geographically precise data sources relevant to assessing health outcomes, economic indicators, educational outcomes, and demographic indicators is desirable.
