Temporary Provisional (TPV), limited to no more than 3 years in duration. This temporary position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process, is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. This position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service examination process. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment.The San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) is dedicated to connecting our diverse communities to learning, opportunities and each other. The library system includes the architecturally significant Main Library, 27 neighborhood branch libraries, two administrative buildings and four bookmobiles. With a collection of more than 3.7 million items, and circulation exceeding 14 million each year, SFPL serves more than 4 million visitors annually. The library embraces its role as the most democratic of institutions, providing safe and welcoming facilities for all.Reporting to the Chief Analytics Officer, the Senior Data Analyst will be part of the Research, Strategy and Analytics Unit, charged with system-wide and organizational responsibility to collect, organize, validate and analyze data from a variety of sources while advancing a data-driven culture within SFPL. The unit is tasked with improving efficiencies, demonstrating outcomes, providing analytical support and developing performance metrics for SFPL projects and initiatives.Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:Developing project plans, including timeline, scope and objectives and key milestone dates.Researching best practices, legal mandates and other relevant background information, while determining needs of key internal/external stakeholders and identifying potential sources of data.Performing benchmarking analyses against peer library jurisdictions.Performing complex analyses which include data selection, validation and manipulation.Identifying process improvement opportunities and developing strategic frameworks for implementation.Contributing to data collection efforts through development and administration of relevant survey methodologies.Developing, presenting and communicating findings and recommendations internally and externally.Developing and managing strong relationships with business stakeholders and technical partners.Preparing, maintaining and analyzing performance measure data.Responding in a timely manner to business and performance measure data inquiries.Ensuring the department meets requisite reporting standards.Assisting in the unit’s efforts to standardize business data and centralize data storage.Creating and maintaining BI dashboards.Monitoring trends in organizational utilization.Reviewing unit work for completeness, technical accuracy, organization, content, tone and grammatical accuracy.Performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned.Desirable Qualifications/Skills:Solid understanding of database structure and management.Working knowledge of Tableau, SQL and programming languages such as Python, R, etc.Ability to learn quickly and be flexible.Familiarity with large urban public library systems.Well-honed interpersonal skills.Minimum Qualifications:Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three (3) years full-time equivalent experience performing professional-level analytical work.
