Position Description:

The University of Louisville's Student Wellbeing unit within the division of Student Affairs is seeking a Director, Campus Recreational Programs to contribute to the growth and development of the university student wellbeing initiative by leading the Campus Recreation area within the division of Student Affairs. This position serves as a member of the Student Wellbeing Leadership team to provide strategic planning, decision-making, and policy development.

Overseeing all aspects of Campus Recreation, the Director, Campus Recreational Programs manages a diverse and comprehensive recreational sports portfolio including intramural sports, informal sports, personal fitness training, group fitness, sports clubs, memberships, marketing, program assessment, safety, financial management and personnel management. This position is also responsible for the operation of the 128,000 sq. ft. Student Recreation Center, the Health Sciences Campus Fitness Center, and three outdoor playing fields. This position also oversees the university's Speech and Distribution of Literature policy and response.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Unit Administration
  • Provides recommendations to AVP in development of student wellbeing goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Plans, manages, and evaluates an annual operating budget which includes budget planning, revenue generation, cash handling, and establishing pricing and fees for services
  • Serves as a member of the division of Student Affairs Department Head group and the Assistant Vice President's leadership team and assists the division of Student Affairs with campus-wide programs and initiatives
  • Maintains the Speech and Distribution of Literature Policy and manages the response to external speakers and situations regarding the policy
  • Promotes and educates healthy decision-making and lifelong learning regarding student personal wellbeing that is in alignment with the wellbeing initiative of the division of Student Affairs
Personnel Management
  • Supervises the employee life cycle (i.e., recruitment, employment, evaluation, and release) of professional staff and student employees
  • Directs new and existing Campus Recreation staff members. Actively engages in the direct report's success in their departmental role and professional development
Campus Recreation
  • Provides strategic leadership, oversight, and overall administration of the department of Campus Recreation and its facilities (SRC, HSC Fitness Center, and three outdoor fields)
  • Develops and implements strategic goals and initiatives for Campus Recreation, establishing the vision and direction for the department, including both short-term and long-term plans
  • Develops Campus Recreation programs and activities in collaboration with various organizations and campus partners to enhance the campus community and student engagement
  • Leads and coordinates SGA overnight bus trips
  • Develops and implements equipment and facility repair and replacement plans to ensure that recreation facilities and equipment remain in optimal condition. Manages the facilities and equipment with a focus on detail management to ensure rapid response and resolution to facility and equipment repair, replacement, and ongoing maintenance
  • Completes ad-hoc equipment and facilities assessments
  • Collaborates with university procurement to ensure all contracts and purchasing policies are followed and to ensure the timely purchase of equipment and parts to support the optimal use of the facilities and equipment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in sports management, physical education, or related field
  • Seven years of progressive responsibility in a senior leadership position
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all areas comprising a diverse and comprehensive recreational sports program including programming, financial management, safety, marketing/assessment, personnel management, facility management, and sports officiating
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, troubleshoot problems, and meet deadlines
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and demonstrated abilities to work effectively with colleagues in offices across the campus
  • Experience utilizing collaborative skills to meet goals

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
