Job Summary:
The Unit Manager II (Hot End) is responsible for managing all aspects of furnace operations, including overseeing the batch house, furnace, and bead formation. This includes safety, quality, energy usage, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure a safe working environment according to Potters Operating Philosophy of Safety, Health, Environmental, and Regulatory Compliance.
- Furnace Operations Management: Manage furnace staff schedules, raw materials, and cullet inventories to ensure continuous operation.
- Procedure Development: Assist in the development of Safe Job Procedures (SJPs) and Quality Procedures.
- Inventory Management: Order and receive raw materials, ensuring proper inventory levels.
- Energy & Performance Monitoring: Monitor furnace energy usage and analyze production data to maximize yield and throughput.
- Housekeeping & Maintenance: Oversee the batch and furnace areas' cleanliness and work with the maintenance manager on preventive maintenance and repairs.
- Staff Training & Development: Foster a continuous improvement culture through staff training and development.
- Reporting: Create and maintain reports for batch materials, furnace operations, cutting wheel programs, and other operational metrics.
- Project Participation: Collaborate with corporate engineering and plant management on process improvement initiatives.
- Quality Control: Ensure glass recipes are managed according to quality standards.
- Participate in safety processes/programs like Behavioral-Based Safety (BBS), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), hazard identification, and stop work orders.
- Complete required safety training and inspections on time.
- Assist with ISO and HSE Management System documentation control.
- Minimum: High School Diploma/GED.
- Preferred: College Degree in Business, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in manufacturing supervision, specifically in continuous process environments.
- 3 years of experience with direct fired gas equipment.
- 3 years of experience managing raw material inventories.
- Microsoft Office: Strong skills in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Microsoft Teams: Proficient in chat, calls, and meetings.
- SAP Experience: Knowledge of SAP or similar ERP systems.
- Glass Furnace Knowledge: Desired but not required.
- Mechanical Equipment Knowledge: Familiarity with bucket elevators, scales, fans, and related equipment.
- Attention to Detail & Organization: Ability to manage multiple tasks and data accurately.
- Interpersonal Skills: Capable of managing and developing employees (5-10 staff).
- A mix of office environment and time spent in the manufacturing plant.
