The employee may drive Department vehicles as a substitute driver. The employee may assist with preparations and setting barricades for City special events. Work involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings. Essential Functions ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Refuse and Recycle Collection Operations. Employee performs manual work functions and operates equipment associated with the collection, transport, and disposal of refuse and recycled materials. Performs manual lifting; loading trash carts, recycle bins, and heavy materials.Transports, loads, and unloads various materials and equipment used in daily operations and projects.Rides routes with drivers to facilitate efficient pickup of materials.Ensures materials are securely placed on trucks to prevent shifting/falling.Cuts tree limbs and picks up debris outside of trash containers.Rakes, sweeps, shovels, and cleans ground around trash disposal areas.Assists drivers of garbage trucks and recycling trucks by directing traffic.Monitors traffic conditions surrounding trucks/equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions.Uses precautionary safety equipment and gear; monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.Recognizes contaminated or hazardous materials in the waste stream and reports findings to supervisor.Delivers new or replacement recycle bins to customers.Transports recycle materials to receiving station in Pensacola, FL.Performs driving functions safely and efficiently in various weather conditions.Serves as a backup driver of garbage or recycling trucks as assigned and if properly licensed.Performs daily vehicle inspections and completes required checklists to ensure safe vehicle operation; identifies and reports mechanical or operational problems.Operates pickup truck to collect and transport trash and recyclable material from inaccessible areas; plans daily routes for maximum efficiency.Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shed and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, maintenance reports, ordinance violation sheets, and other documents. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Assists with placing barricades and barriers for City special events.Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications Possess a high school diploma or GED.Minimum of six (6) months of previous work experience and/or training involving equipment operation, and manual labor; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.Possess a current and valid driver's license; must be insurable.Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one (1) year of employment.Ability to work non-standard hours.Ability to travel.Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen. Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills and Abilities(* Can be acquired on the job) *Knowledge of City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.*Knowledge of City geography and trash locations.Knowledge of the trash and recycle material ordinances.Knowledge of appropriate methods of lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing heavy bins and containers.Knowledge of safety rules including accident causation and prevention.Communication skills to effectively communicate with co-workers and general public.Verbal skills to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, the general public, over the telephone and two-way radio.Writing skills to maintain documents and logs using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.Reading skills to understand and interpret City ordinances and directives.Math skills to perform basic calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide).Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.Ability to maintain professional attitude.Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.Ability to use two-way radio.Ability to deal with all contacts in a courteous and patient manner.Ability to handle irate individuals.Ability to collect solid waste materials, which involves lifting collection containers weighing between forty (40) and one hundred (100) pounds.Ability to run a route any time; day or night.Ability and willingness to work under all conditions of weather.Ability to work in conditions involving frequent climbing, bending, jumping, carrying, standing, pushing, pulling, and reaching above the head.Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.Ability to read maps and follow designated routes.Ability to work with minimal supervision.Ability to drive.Physical Demands The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.
