The Senior Director, Event Planning and Operations has comprehensive responsibilities from initial concept through to completion for event planning and production, event-related communications, and the daily operations of a team of event professionals meeting the highest standards of excellence and professionalism. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: Supervise and oversee the activities of logistics and production staff involved in the physical execution of events that occur both on- and off-campus, including the Assistant Director, Event Communications, the Director, Events Management, Guest Relations, a Coordinator and other staff as needed. NATURE AND SCOPE: Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Events and Protocol, the Senior Director executes a defined, comprehensive events and engagement strategy and the administration of a multimillion-dollar budget. The position ensures effective collaboration and resource sharing with university administrators requesting support, including for major events managed by the Executive Director, Campus Events. The Senior Director also coordinates the activities of a variety of external vendors, consultants, freelancers, contractors, and volunteers. Teamwork and collaboration both across the University and with other development staff and alumni relations are essential. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: The role executes an existing calendar of events and will put into place a plan for expansion with the aim of increasing Howard’s community engagement. The position requires strong leadership skills to manage a large team and navigate complex logistical challenges. Core responsibilities include the development and implementation of event planning procedures and best practices to enhance event quality and efficiency. The Senior Director oversees the administration of a multimillion-dollar budget, ensuring adherence to financial guidelines and the efficient allocation of resources so that events are executed with precision and within budget. Additional responsibilities include negotiating contracts with vendors, managing vendor relationships, ensuring compliance with university purchasing procedures and with university policies, protocols, and safety standards. CORE COMPETENCIES: Proven success leading teams that manage complex events, assignments, special projects and multiple work streams; Proficiency managing budgets, financial data, contracts and event communications; Ability to navigate internal processes and structures to advance relationships with campus partners, and provide proactive communications relevant to event logistics and execution; Demonstrated resourcefulness and leadership that exemplifies a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence; Demonstrated best practices in vendor negotiations, university event purchasing procedures, reconciliation, contract fulfilment, and reporting; Ability to assess various university internal and external meeting facilities, technology and equipment facilities depending on unique event requirements; Ability to access and work with data (financial and other) to inform budgeting, reporting and task completion; Ability to work collaboratively and provide leadership to a team working in a fast-paced environment and under stress; and Ability to exercise independent judgment and a high degree of discretion. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred or seven (7) years of relevant experience Minimum three (3) years in a supervisory event management role Proficiency with technology specific to event planning preferred Superior written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and relationship-building acumen Compliance Salary Range Disclosure Expected Pay Range: $131,818 - $145,000 About Us
