ResponsibilitiesMainspring is seeking a Materials and Process Engineer to join an interdisciplinary engineering development team. The successful candidate will collaborate with the broader team to define and develop materials and process specifications for components in Mainspring's Linear Generator system and will thrive in a nimble fast-paced environment that includes engineering, R&D and manufacturing.Execute material testing programs to characterize performance and qualify vendors. Understand and utilize standard test methodologies and develop new tests for specialized applications in areas of tribology, corrosion, strength, and fatigue.
Work with the engineering and supply chain teams to develop material selection processes and acceptance criteria.
Work with design engineers in the development and implementation of the risk analysis process. Be part of a cross-functional team executing FMEA for design, process, and maintenance.
Optimize materials specifications and processes for cost and reliability.
Work cross-functionally to develop and optimize critical processes:Thermal spray coatings
Castings
Plated and painted coatings
Welds
Heat treating
Adhesives
QualificationsBS in Materials Science/Engineering or Metallurgy required. Advanced degree is a plus.
Minimum 4 years of experience as a Materials or Mechanical engineer, 2 years with PhD.
Must have process development experience in one of the following areas – Welding, Heat treatment of Ferrous and Non-ferrous materials, casting, corrosion resistant coatings.
Up to 25% travel to work with vendors, suppliers, etc.
Deep understanding of engineering materials, basic metallurgy, and manufacturing processes.
Knowledge of material failure mechanisms (fatigue, creep, etc.) highly desired.
Experience with process development – working with vendors, preparing specifications and qualification plans.
Experience with materials characterization and Non-Destructive Testing a plus.
Excellent communication skills, capable of being a technical subject matter expert.
Understanding and use of FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis).
Data Analysis and reporting capabilities (Matlab/Python, Google Docs, Weibull ++, etc.).
Adaptable self-starter, capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment.
The Bay Area salary for this role is $130k-$150k base + pre-IPO stock options + benefits. This position is on-site in Menlo Park, CA. The salary will be adjusted based on the experience of the employee.
