DescriptionPOSITION OVERVIEWThe Cascade PBS’s mission is to inform and inspire our community to make the world a better place.Our vision is to be the most essential and relevant media organization in the region.The News Editor develops strategies for Cascade PBS’s approach to news and political coverage, leads a team of reporters, associate news editor and associate photo editor in the execution of that strategy and collaborates with other newsroom leaders to develop large-scale editorial projects and foster a positive and productive newsroom culture while demonstrating Cascade PBS’s values of integrity, community, innovation and diversity.Salary:

Benefits include:11 paid holidays1 personal holiday4 weeks of Paid Time Off (PTO) to startHalf-day Fridays during SummerCompany-matched 401(k) Retirement Plan that is fully-vested immediatelyEmployer paid ORCA cardEmployee Assistance Program (EAP)MedicalDentalVisionKEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIESDevelop and execute a consistent and effective approach to news and politics coverage for the Cascade PBS newsroom with a focus on workflows and standards.Lead news meetings, track workflows for daily content and respond to news developments.Manage, develop and collaborate with the Associate News Editor, who will assist in editing duties, as well as training, staff development and writing assignments.Manage, develop and collaborate with the Associate Photo Editor, who will lead in the development of photography for the Cascade PBS newsroom.Manage a team of staff reporters covering the city of Seattle, state government and Central/Eastern Washington.Foster a collaborative environment with a focus on enterprise reporting, directing continuing coverage, special projects and other collaborations.Collaborate with Investigations Editor on investigative projects emerging from the news desk.Identify opportunities for staff training and development.Oversee the development of and maintain a pool of freelance journalists who can provide additional coverage for existing beats and develop new beats.Maintain an annual budget for the news desk, projecting production costs and ensuring operational efficiencies when approving new projects.Assign and edit news stories from staff and freelance writers, ensuring that their reporting meets journalistic and organizational standards for fairness, thoroughness and quality.Lead in the identification and acquisition of stories from other media outlets that can be posted at Cascade PBS, with attention to quality and relevance to the Cascade PBS audience.Ensure overall quality of final stories, backing up other senior editors and copy chief with editing responsibilities.Write and maintain our political newsletter.Collaborate with other newsroom leaders to foster a positive and productive newsroom culture and contribute toward the overall growth of the Cascade PBS newsroom.Work with Director of Digital News to create stories that are visually compelling and incorporate media in multiple formats.Serve as a consulting or story editor on video and audio projects associated with the reporting produced on the news desk.Plan and work closely with internal Marketing and Digital Content team to amplify and engage with Cascade PBS’s growing digital audiences, including social media, ahead of planned publication of news and politics stories.Serve as a leader in the development of innovative journalism projects that require strategic planning and follow-through in order to achieve success.Assist the Director of Digital News in the development of partnerships and other collaborations with external media outlets.Serve as a Cascade PBS thought-leader and representative at community and partner events, industry gatherings and in other formal settings.Develop a network of contacts in the community that can help identify compelling issues that are not currently being adequately covered by local media outlets.Collaborate with team members across other departments in the organization to foster a positive and productive culture at Cascade PBS.Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIESDemonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; significant experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and developing and managing projects.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external relationships, as well as the ability to mentor less experienced team members.Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment.Deep understanding of journalism ethics and practices, with nonprofit or public media experience preferred.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEBachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business, or a related field or equivalent experience required.3-5 years of experience as a writer or editor in a deadline-oriented environment; local news/politics-related preferred.3-5 years of experience managing editorial staffers; local news/politics-related preferred.Experience with digital media platforms, multimedia storytelling tools and techniques, and social media.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time.Ability to type on a keyboard for long periods of time.Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.Must have a valid driver’s license or reliable means of transportation to meet requirements of the job.Cascade PBS is committed to building a team that represents a diversity of thought, experience and personal background.
