The City Richmond's Department of Neighborhood and Community Services is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator. The Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for fostering relationships between residents, community organizations, and local government to enhance communication, participation, and collaboration in neighborhood initiatives. This role focuses on empowering communities, addressing local issues, and facilitating a sense of shared responsibility for neighborhood improvements.

The Neighborhood Engagement Coordinator plays a vital role in building and maintaining strong relationships between residents, community leaders, and local government. The coordinator works to ensure that the needs and concerns of neighborhood residents are heard and addressed, while encouraging active participation in community projects, events, and local decision-making processes. This role includes outreach, event coordination, problem-solving, and acting as a liaison between the community and local government.This position will be located within the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services' Office of Neighborhood Engagement and will report to the Manager of the Office of Neighborhood Engagement.Duties include but are not limited to

Community Outreach & Engagement :

Develop and implement strategies for outreach to underrepresented or underserved communities.Facilitate meetings, forums, and workshops with neighborhood associations, residents, and stakeholders to encourage dialogue and participation.Engage residents in local government processes, planning, and policymaking.Build relationships with key community stakeholders, such as civic groups, businesses, schools, and nonprofits.Program Development & Coordination :

Plan and coordinate community programs, events, and initiatives that enhance neighborhood development.Organize and promote educational initiatives that inform residents about available city services, resources, and programs.Communication & Advocacy :

Serve as a point of contact for neighborhood residents regarding city services, resources, and other needs.Collaborate with city departments to ensure timely and effective communication of resident concerns and neighborhood needs.Keep residents informed about local issues, resources, and events.Data Collection & Reporting :

Collect and analyze feedback from residents to assess community needs and improve engagement strategies.Maintain records of outreach efforts, meeting outcomes, and engagement metrics.Provide regular reports to city leadership and community stakeholders on engagement progress and neighborhood issues.The Neighborhood Engagement Coordinator works both in-office and out in the community. The position may require attendance at evening and weekend events, as well as occasional field visits to various neighborhoods.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

Required Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science, Social Work, or a related field (or equivalent experience_) preferred but not required.2+ years of experience in community outreach, public engagement, or neighborhood organizing.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and group facilitation.Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.Knowledge of local government structures, community development, and public policy.Experience in event planning and coordination.Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and foster inclusive environments.Proficiency in Microsoft OfficeBilingual and Bicultural abilities (preferred but not required)Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple and concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, see, use hands, wrists, or fingers in a repetitive motion; and finger (pick, pinch, type or otherwise work primarily with fingers). The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, reach extending hands and arms in any direction, lift, and push or pull. Some assignments may involve frequent stooping and kneeling, and moderate crouching and crawling. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
