Description

The Shipping Manager is responsible for coordinating all packaging and shipment activities for the site. This includes outgoing shipping activity; scheduling; coordinating freight forwarders, LTL, Truckload and parcel; export documentation; coordination of Haz-Mat/DG shipments; and maintaining packaging and supplies availability to support all product and general shipping requirements. Emphasis on leading the team using Lean principles, including Daily Management to monitor Key Performance Indicators. May require some extended hours and the occasional Saturday.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Manages the Shipping Team's workload, priorities, performance, training and development.
  • Prepares quarterly employee appraisals and evaluates daily performance. May include coaching and counseling of an employee and providing constructive feedback and recognition to the team as appropriate.
  • Leads employee interview and selection process with cross-functional support.
  • Collaborates with Export Compliance function to develop and implement effective shipping policies which maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Facilitates cross training with Receiving and Materials staff to ensure adequate Shipping capacity to meet peak demand.
  • Addresses shipping defects by determining root cause and implementing effective corrective actions - involving other functional areas as required.
  • Monitors and continuously improves performance of Key shipping metrics (OTD, accuracy, damage)
  • Takes ownership of department documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensures team is trained on and consistently follows all company policies and procedures.
  • Promotes, trains, and facilitates Lean Manufacturing methodologies (5S, Kaizen, visual management, etc.).
  • Coordinates with Operations peers to optimize material flow throughout facility by evaluating Value Streams and implementing layout/process improvements.
  • Monitors performance of team vs. company/departmental goals; taking appropriate actions as necessary.
  • Ensures proper transaction of material within the company business system (ERP).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or 5+ years of management experience in shipping and/or inventory control.
  • Ability to partner across the organization to help achieve Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost goals.
  • Proficient with various Microsoft Office Applications. Demonstrated ability to use a Business system (MRP) to complete shipping transactions.
  • Knoledge of, or the ability to learn to process orders, shipping labels, and documents for domestic and international
  • Lean Manufacturing (or Six Sigma) experience.
  • Ability to read and follow procedures, SNC BOM (Bill of Material) and traveler sheets, and basic working Knowledge of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge).
  • Operation of powered forklift and electric pallet jack equipment, when needed.
  • Haz-Mat Training
