Overview : We are seeking an energetic, hands-on individual to join our Material Science and Characterization Lab. This lab is dedicated to applying advanced analytical technologies to the characterization of materials used in consumer products. As part of our Failure Analysis Team, you will provide failure analysis services to address reliability, manufacturing, and material design issues. About the Role : The successful candidate will utilize a variety of techniques such as FTIR, GC-MS, IC-MS, TGA, DSC, and microscopy to investigate material-based issues. Your expertise will contribute to resolving complex problems and ensuring the quality and reliability of our consumer products. Key Responsibilities : Operate FTIR, GC-MS, IC-MS, TGA, DSC, and other analytical instruments to collect data on the composition of polymers, contaminants, and outgassing from adhesives/inks in support of failure analysis investigations. Prepare samples for analysis, including polymers, adhesives, multi-layered composites, small particulate debris, contamination, and discoloration. Utilize microscopy techniques, such as optical microscopy, to characterize sample structures and morphology. Collaborate closely with team members and other departments to share findings and support project goals. Technical Skills Requirements : Hands-on experience with FTIR instrumentation; familiarity with GC-MS, IC-MS, TGA, and DSC is a plus. Proficiency in sample preparation for analytical techniques mentioned above. Knowledge of safe work practices in a lab environment and experience handling solvents, adhesives, and polymers. Ability to manipulate small objects while observing under a microscope. Personal Skill Set : Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Highly organized and detail-oriented in lab analyses. Strong prioritization skills to manage multiple high-priority tasks simultaneously. Flexibility to adapt quickly to changing business needs. Collaborative mindset with a willingness to work closely with a motivated lab team. Exceptional attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in all analyses. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Minimum Requirements : Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a related discipline. Must have experience using FTIR instruments; experience with GC-MS, IC-MS, TGA, and DSC is preferred. Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and experience working with various materials.
