Purpose of this Role

The Development Director ensures financial stability/sustainability for the organization through ethical fundraising. An enthusiastic advocate for Neighborhood House, they advance our mission through trust and integrity. The Development Director oversees and develops fundraising and communication plans to align with the organization’s strategic goals. The Development Director is a perceptive and creative thinker who can help lead the organization in a time of meaningful growth.

Primary Responsibilities

Develops a comprehensive annual fundraising plan

that includes individual donor giving, major gifts, planned gifts, corporate and business partnerships, grants, and special events. Grows Annual Fund (currently $1million) while completing a $7+ million capital campaign.

Develops a communication and marketing plan

to ensure cohesive messaging for all programs and services. Oversees internal messaging and information sharing; messaging to donors and stakeholders; and communication to the public at large.

Manages a portfolio of major donors

and oversees strategies for a large base of annual individual donors. Connects Neighborhood House’s mission to the donor/funder’s philanthropic goals and ambitions.

Monitors fundraising results and reports progress

to Senior Leadership and the Board of Directors.

Leads evaluation of fundraising processes and outcomes

to ensure decision-making is informed and data-driven. Collaborates with Senior Leadership to develop budgets, forecast revenue and expenses, and reconcile finance and gift reporting.

Manages and empowers the development team

to encourage their growth and skill set to advance our fundraising efforts.

Communicates fundraising goals throughout the organization

and empowers staff and volunteers to participate in furthering our efforts and meeting our goals.

Brings vision and holistic thinking

to evaluate and reshape the development department to meet the organization’s needs. Roles and responsibilities to reconsider include fundraising, events management, volunteer and business relations, grants, and communications.

Minimum Qualifications

7+ years of related experience in major gifts, philanthropy, development, etc.

Relevant bachelor’s degree or comparable combination of experience and education.

5+ years of leadership experience managing a team of direct reports.

Proven ability to identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit high-level prospects, with a documented history of closing large gifts.

Experience developing compelling major gift proposals, acknowledgments, reports, and other written communications.

Prior experience partnering with MarCom and an understanding of prevailing marketing and communication strategies.

Strong interpersonal skills, self-starter, ability to organize projects and manage time.

Public speaking, training facilitation, and presentation skills.

Experience managing operational budgets.

Strong proficiency with Customer Relationship Management systems (Raiser’s Edge preferred)

Prior experience establishing and enforcing policies and procedures for donors, donations, and data management.

Intermediate to Advanced level knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) is essential.

Personal or professional experience interacting with individuals from different cultures, diverse communities, and those whose English language skills are limited.

Preferred Qualifications

Grant writing experience.

Social media experience.
