Our mission is to develop innovative AI/ML methods, study AI adoptions in educational settings, and create technology solutions that enhance K-12 learning experiences. The Center focuses on four key areas: Research, Technology Development, Training, and Public Engagement. The Center's work is generously funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and among others, enabling us to pursue cutting-edge research and development in AI for education.POSITION PURPOSEWe are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Assistant Director of Research and Technology Development to work alongside the Director, Dr. Min Sun, and other core faculty members. The Assistant Director will play a crucial role in overseeing and coordinating the Center's two intertwined strands of work: Research and Technology Development. Among other responsibilities, the key responsibilities of this position will lead a team to: develop specialized AI/ML methods, study effective design features of edtech products, study AI adoptions in educational settings, and create technology solutions that enhance K-12 learning experiences. This position will also work closely with an EdTech startup team, Colleague AI, to develop product features and conduct research to assess its effects on teacher efficiency and student learning outcomes.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESResearch ManagementOversee and coordinate research projects in AI/ML for educationCollaborate with faculty and researchers to develop research agenda and methodologiesEnsure research aligns with the Center's goals and educational domain knowledgeIn collaboration with the Dean’s Office Finance and Administration team, manage research budgets and timelinesTechnology Development LeadershipLead the design, testing, and refinement of AI-powered tools and platforms, working with the Colleague AI teamOversee the development process from concept to implementationEnsure technology solutions meet the specific needs of K-12 educational settingsTeam ManagementManage and mentor a team of graduate students and data scientists in AI/ML projectsFoster a collaborative and innovative work environmentCoordinate with the Director and core faculty on team assignments and project prioritiesStakeholder EngagementEngage with relevant stakeholders, including but not limited to, K-12 educational institutions, EdTech partners, policymakers, and fundersRepresent the Center at conferences, workshops, and public engagementsContribute to the Center's public engagement initiatives, including dissemination of research findingsStrategic PlanningContribute to the Center's strategic planning and growth initiativesIdentify funding opportunities and assist in grant writingAssist with reportingOther Duties as AssignedMINIMUM REQUIREMENTSPh.D. in Computer Science, Data Sciences, Education, or a related field to include a minimum 3 years of experience leading research projects and EdTech product developmentEquivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSPassionate about using research and technology to improve K-12 teaching and learningDemonstrated experience in U.S. K-12 education systems as a teacher, administrator, for exampleProven track record in managing teams of graduate students and data scientists in AI/ML projectsStrong understanding of AI/ML applications in educational contexts, particularly generative AIExcellent project management and organizational skillsOutstanding communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environmentDESIRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience in securing research grants and managing funded projects, especially federal grantsPublication record in relevant academic journals or conferencesFamiliarity with educational policies and practices in the United StatesExperience in developing and delivering training programs in AI/ML for educationHow to ApplyThe initial application should include:A statement of interest.
