Job Description:
The Director of Business Analytics oversees business intelligence, data architecture and management, data science, visualization, artificial intelligence, data inference and data reporting to ensure well-informed strategic decisions based on high-quality data. This role is responsible for advancing the organization's strategic and tactical goals. The Director aligns business goals with department objectives by utilizing relevant key metrics, statistics and dashboards. Additionally, this role will promote data-centric decision-making to help departments achieve their goals and will share knowledge with the analytics team to identify data-driven changes that enhance business results.
Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a comprehensive business analytics strategy aligned with organizational objectives.
Direct, develop and lead one or more business analytics teams to build tools and data visualizations that show progress towards business objectives.
Lead the analytics team in building robust integrations, reporting, visualization, warehousing and regulatory compliance.
Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their business and create relevant key goal, performance and risk indicators.
Ensure team members share high-quality, clear and accurate data with stakeholders to drive business value.
Tell a compelling story of the company’s progression towards goals.
Build and maintain a formally documented data governance program that defines authority and control over data and the meaningful use of data.
Establish policies, standards and procedures for effective and efficient data use.
Develop a documented data lifecycle management program to track content generation and data transformation.
Provide data-driven insights to senior leadership, offering compelling recommendations for process changes within the organization.
Enact and maintain a data quality program that spans all organizational data.
Conduct audits to ensure the data lifecycle delivers clear value.
Foster a culture of curiosity and energize the organization to act based on verified data; guide the business analysis team to convert data to actionable wisdom.
Keep the analytics team informed and focused on delivering accurate and easy-to-understand intelligence to all departments and companies, partners and insureds.
Conduct meetings and strategy sessions to discuss responsibilities across departments to achieve common business goals.
Develop and present 1-, 3-, and 5-year business analytics roadmap.
Assist with the annual IT budget process.
Work with human resources to create a pipeline of talent.
Build strong, professional relationships with contractors, vendors, partners and customers; attend relevant conferences and meet-ups.
Ensure all data operations maintain high integrity, availability, confidentiality and privacy.
Provide critical feedback regarding buying or building artificial intelligence products.
Make purchasing decisions, serve as the contact person for external companies and represent the company and affiliates on influential external roles such as NCCI Technology Committee.
Write, review and edit contracts, requests for proposal, requests for information, agreement and other binding documents independently or with the help of legal/compliance team.
Direct team members to achieve goals using frameworks such as 4DX.
Motivate team members to become leaders through education, mentorship and opportunities to apply their skills.
Participate in committees as needed to inform audience about the value of data.
Share business analytics information and updates with the executive team.
Keep the broader population informed of new dashboards, reports and data-related changes.
Architect, configure, and build business intelligence tools as needed.
Provide or assign on-call coverage as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree with at least 7 years of progressive business analytics experience or master’s degree with at least 5 years of progressive business analytics experience.
3+ years in a lead, managerial or higher capacity.
Experience in the property and casualty insurance industry.
Experience with complex technical designs, architecture, decision-making and articulating product vision/roadmaps.
Expertise in data inference and presentation (preferred).
Experience in at least one modern data visualization tooling such as Qlik, Tableau or PowerBI (preferred).
Experience handling large datasets (preferred).
Experience in artificial intelligence, data modeling and data science (preferred).
Experience with statistical tooling such as R and SAS (preferred).
Experience deploying applications to the cloud services like AWS (preferred).
Experience developing against or administering SQL Server, MySQL or PostgreSQL (preferred).
Experience in governance, security frameworks, risk management or auditing (preferred).
Strong storytelling, data visualization, data interpretation and communication skills.
Deep understanding of open source technologies and licensing constraints.
Knowledge of Lean Software Development or Six Sigma concepts.
Familiarity with Agile and Waterfall development methodologies.
Strong understanding of algorithms, design patterns, refactoring and distributed version control systems such as Git or Mercurial.
Strong architectural, security, documentation and diagramming skills.
Proficient with operating systems and networks.
Knowledge of OWASP top 10 vulnerabilities and mitigation.
Fluent on Windows, Unix/Unix-like platforms and Microsoft Office.
Aptitude for problem-solving and complex concepts for diverse audiences.
Familiarity with cloud solutions and integration tools like Jenkins, CircleCI and TFS.
Familiarity with security penetration testing and assessing vulnerabilities.
Strong understanding of Property and Casualty insurance regulations.
Familiarity with PII, PHI and sensitive data handling techniques.
Familiarity with capacity planning, resource allocation and costing.
Knowledge of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data modeling and/or predictive analytics.
Detail-oriented and have great organizational and time management skills.
