I am responsible for running the Project Management Team at my company as either a: Vice President, Project Executive, or Ops Manager. I have a substantial background in the construction industry, where I have worked my way through the ranks for 20+ years in the Central Florida market. I previously held leadership positions on heavy highway, earthwork and underground utilities projects from contract to completion on schedule and within budget, estimating, plans takeoffs, initiating and negotiating change orders with clients, scheduling subcontractors and suppliers and resolving job issues. Effectively communicating and cooperating with support staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
Develop and implement project management strategies that align with the company’s long-term business goals and growth objectives.
Lead a portfolio of large, complex heavy civil construction projects, ensuring they are executed to the highest safety and quality standards.
Serve as a key member of the executive team, contributing to the strategic direction of the company.
Project Oversight & Execution:
Provide leadership and oversight across all phases of project management, including planning, budgeting, risk management, resource allocation, procurement, and contract administration.
Ensure that projects meet or exceed performance expectations in terms of schedule, budget, quality, and safety.
Monitor and report on project progress, proactively addressing issues and implementing corrective actions as needed.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations as well as industry standards and company policies.
Safety & Risk Management
Champion a culture of safety across all projects, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and regulations.
Identify and mitigate project risks, with a focus on safety, environmental impact, financial risk, and schedule delays.
Work closely with safety officers and project teams to implement industry-leading safety practices and performance benchmarks.
Stakeholder Relations & Client Engagement:
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, subcontractors, suppliers, government agencies, and regulatory bodies.
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and ensure their needs and expectations are consistently met or exceeded.
Facilitate communication between the project management team and other departments (e.g., engineering, procurement, finance, and legal).
Team Leadership & Development:
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of project managers, project engineers, and support staff, promoting collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
Recruit, retain, and develop top talent within the project management organization.
Foster a culture of innovation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
Budget & Resource Management:
Oversee project budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance, ensuring projects remain within the approved budget.
Ensure optimal resource allocation across projects, including labor, equipment, and materials, to maximize efficiency and profitability.
Work closely with procurement teams to manage supply chain logistics, negotiate contracts, and minimize project delays.
Process Improvement & Innovation:
Implement and enhance project management methodologies, processes, and tools that drive efficiency and operational excellence.
Leverage technology, including BIM (Building Information Modeling) and other construction management software, to streamline project workflows and improve collaboration.
Stay informed of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in heavy civil construction.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field. A master’s degree or MBA is preferred.
Experience:
15+ years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction, with a minimum of 10 years in a leadership or senior project management role.
Certifications:
PMP (Project Management Professional) or CCM (Certified Construction Manager) is preferred. OSHA certifications and safety training are highly valued.
Skills:
Proven experience in managing large, complex infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, or utilities.
In-depth knowledge of heavy civil construction processes, equipment, and materials.
Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
Expert understanding of construction contracts (e.g., design-build, lump sum, unit price), scheduling, budgeting, and risk management.
Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
Proficiency in construction management software (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6, or similar tools). Experience in Spectrum software or Viewpoint software, P6 and HCSS needed.
