GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the collecting, transporting and disposing of solid waste/recyclable materials generated within the city. Performs skilled work in the operation of motorized equipment and supervises personnel.




ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates sanitation trucks for the collection, transport and disposal of solid waste and recycled materials from residential and commercial customers.
  • Inspects equipment for proper operation and safety. Insures that vehicle is equipped with proper safety equipment and necessary equipment to perform daily assignments (e.g. first-aid kit, safety flares, broom, water cooler, etc.)
  • Performs general vehicle maintenance, ensures that the truck is cleaned properly and reports any vehicle operation or safety issues to immediate supervisor.
  • Responsible for observing traffic laws, rules and regulations, and using defensive driving in truck operation.
  • May work as a sanitation worker as needed.
  • Willingness to work in adverse conditions.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays and hours beyond a normal shift.
  • Performs any other duties or tasks that may be assigned.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of state/local laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on the highway and city streets.
  • The ability to safely operate large equipment under all driving conditions.
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation of solid waste collection equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, appropriate methods of lifting and department policies.
  • The ability to establish a positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public and city staff.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be able to read, write and follow instructions. High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
  • Two (2) years' experience operating heavy equipment vehicles of 26,000 GVW or greater and be familiar with the operations of hydraulics.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License class "B" or higher.



EQUIPMENT USED

Automated collection truck, front-end loader truck, rear-end loader truck, claw truck, radio and various hand tools.




PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work involves frequent standing, sitting, walking, lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, stepping up and down, bending, pushing, pulling, driving a truck and exposure to extreme weather and insects.
  • Work requires operating large solid waste collection equipment.



JOB LOCATION

All city owned buildings and facilities, all city owned land, city streets, all city rights of way and any location needed within the Apopka Urban Service Area.
