SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent, this position is responsible for the operation of assigned trucks and/or equipment such as a rear loader, knuckle boom, backhoe loader or other equipment as necessary. This position may also be indirectly responsible for up to two other persons as assigned. This position is required to work shifts including nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel. This position will work in alleys picking up bulk waste materials and disposing of them at approved roll off locations, at the transfer station or landfill.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

* Operates solid waste equipment on assigned route, which could include heavy traffic and may also require the driver to drive and/or back into narrow alleys or streets.

* Operates a variety of equipment as assignments are subject to change as required for the efficient operation of the department.

* Collects solid waste using automated collection and processing equipment as well as manual collection of solid waste.

* Delivers and offloads solid waste collected at the transfer station or landfill.

* Inspects, washes, cleans (interior and exterior), and performs minor repairs to equipment as assigned.

* Performs equipment inspections and completes inspection reports.

* Completes daily task reports and reports all unsafe conditions to the supervisor.

* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent. Two years of experience operating medium and large trucks is preferred. Valid Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver's License required. Prior backhoe or similar equipment experience is recommended for knuckle boom truck operators and backhoe loaders.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

* Ability to read maps, route printouts, or instructions is required.

* Ability to use routing software and other software-based programs.

* Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers.

* Ability to operate solid waste trucks and equipment in varied weather and traffic conditions.

* Basic knowledge and understanding of the hydraulic controls on the solid waste trucks/equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
