Summary:
The Director of Product Development is a pivotal role responsible for leading the research and development of new items, product enhancements and product redesigns. You will evaluate the potential and practicality of fresh, further processed and fully cooked poultry products while working with a cross functional team to plan and accomplish the defined goals. This position requires the use of independent judgement, long term vision and collaborative leadership to prioritize and execute the duties and responsibilities required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage, coach, and develop an NPD team that consistently creates high-quality custom products that meet customer, market, flavor, and operational needs.
Guide and lead the development and implementation of new products from concept to the marketplace both within the company and with Co-Packers.
Prioritize development projects to ensure alignment of strategic goals keeping the senior management informed of such efforts on an ongoing basis.
Work jointly with production to understand the practical aspects of production such as raw material availability, production scheduling, additional processing costs, packaging, etc.
Maintain the product development process encompassing all key steps – from brainstorming to formulation, customer acceptance, commercialization and launch.
Develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and resources while maintaining personal and departmental accountability.
Research new ingredients, processing techniques, and technologies to support the company’s innovation goals.
Establish both short-term and long-term departmental goals and maintain a budget.
Develop and maintain relationships with key suppliers, vendors, customers, copackers and cross functional teams.
Support Sales to carry out product presentations of new items to new and existing customers when requested.
Ensure the proper balance sales, production, financial and customer objectives.
This is a 100% onsite position and may contain up to 30% travel.
Required Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in food science, culinary or related field with ten plus years progressive experience in new product development within a food manufacturing environment (protein preferred).
Documented success in developing new food products that have excelled in the consumer market.
Expertise in further processing and production cooking equipment.
Superior communication, organizational, negotiating and problem-solving skills.
Comprehensive knowledge of FDA and USDA regulatory requirements and food safety standards.
Strong sales, and interpersonal skills.
Physical demands include lifting, bending, standing, stooping, driving, etc. as necessary to perform the various production, sales and marketing activities.
