ROLE
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of complex precision optical systems and components to meet both customer requirements and application needs. He/she must be experienced in evaluating optical design solutions via sophisticated analytical techniques and tools to predict performance and manufacturability. This includes lens design, tolerance analysis, and system performance modeling in support of a variety of program deliverables ranging from prototype hardware to first article production units. The candidate will also be responsible to help develop test methods and procedures to characterize optical system performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES & PERFORMANCE MEASURES
- Serve as Optical Design Engineer for product development of governmental and commercial products.
- Produce optical lens designs with supporting analysis to include Monte Carlo simulation, sensitivity, and tolerance analysis.
- Design optical systems using aspheres, reflective, and diffractive elements.
- Utilize Zemax optical design program utilizing various materials.
- Produce PowerPoint presentations documenting the optical designs in support of Design Review Activities for both internal and external customers.
- Prior experience with translating vague needs into firm optical specifications.
- Work closely with manufacturing on design and process issues for optical elements.
- Work closely with Opto-Mechanical engineers to ensure that optical tolerances are translated correctly into engineering drawings and opto-mechanical mounting schemes.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by consistently educating oneself in areas of science necessary for completing the projects and tasks at hand.
- Work both independently and as a team to complete projects.
- Educate other team members and engineers in optical science and other fundamental physics principles to build the technical capability of the company as a whole.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in optics, physics, or equivalent.
- Experience in optical cad software (e.g. Zemax)
- Knowledge of optical principles
- Strong presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills, including problem identification, analysis, action planning, and execution
- Experience with Microsoft Office Products: Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point.
- Solid analytical/problem-solving skills, including problem identification, analysis, action planning, and execution
- Demonstrated ability to handle and complete multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment where projects change on a weekly basis.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and communicate effectively through listening, understanding and supplying timely feedback as well as continuously demonstrates a 'can do' attitude
- Self-starter with willingness and discipline to continually learn.
