R&D Senior Chemist

The Chemist position focuses on the development and execution of materials characterization methods that enable the design of coatings with exceptional application and cured film performance. The successful candidate for this position will have experience in creating and executing materials characterization projects, programs, or methodologies and working collaboratively with key stakeholders. Responsibilities include the characterization of formulations and products to expand scientific understanding of coating performance which leads to accelerated new product development. This chemist will work closely with analytical and formulation teams to deliver results to internal stake holders. This position is based in Minneapolis, MN reporting to the Material Science and Technology Manager. Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. Responsibilities include: Investigates structure property relationships of raw materials and paint films for architectural and performance coatings. Executes materials science research projects in collaboration with business unit R&D teams that expand scientific understanding or new test methodologies which lead to accelerated product and process development. Works with team members and customers to develop new methods and implement new technique to support architectural and performance coatings group. Clearly articulates project work plans to the technical team and management to align objectives. Responds to highly technical and complex questions and concerns from customers, research professionals, quality control, and other internal and external parties regarding development and related programs and services. Presents results and plans to internal and external customers. Collaborates with universities and external vendors for new instrumentation and problem-solving techniques. BASIC QUALIFICATION: * Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status). FORMAL EDUCATION: Required: * Must have a Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Math ("STEM") field Preferred: * Master's Degree or Ph.D. KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE: Required: * 5 years of experience in an industrial or university setting * 5 years of experience with rheology of coatings and films * Thorough understanding of rheology, material science and structure property relationships. * Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a team setting Preferred: * Expertise in rheology, fluid atomization, thermal kinetics characterization, or mechanical performance. * Experience in automotive coating, protective and marine coating, architectural, and industrial coatings. * Thorough understanding of rheology, material science and structure property relationships. * Knowledge of data science, latex, polyurethane, epoxy, silicone chemistry, liquid coating.
