You will be based in our Boston office, joining the Energy Solutions team within McKinsey's Global Energy & Materials practice.

Your impact within our firm

As a Knowledge Analyst at McKinsey Energy Solutions within the Power & Heat team, you will be instrumental in shaping our proprietary market intelligence on the global power and heat sectors.

You will delve into topics such as power demand forecasting, power supply technologies, power system modeling, market dynamics and trading, transmission and distribution, and heat supply and demand, among others.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with experts from our Energy and Sustainability practices, integrating macroeconomic, technological, and policy trends with McKinsey's insights on the global power and heat sectors. Leveraging these insights, you will refine and expand our models for power and heat supply and demand forecasting, applying them to client projects for asset-backed consulting.

Daily problem-solving will be a central aspect of your job. You will work alongside your manager, the leadership of Energy Solutions, and colleagues from the Power & Heat team as well as other functions across the firm. As you gain experience, you will contribute to the strategic direction of these topics and help develop more detailed projections. You will deepen your expertise in global and US energy markets and become a go-to expert in your content area, supporting colleagues and clients, including on longer-term client-serving projects.

Your qualifications and skills
  • Advanced degree in science, management, engineering, economics or other discipline with a quantitative focus
  • Prior experience in power and heat-related topics, especially in power modeling using production cost tools (e.g., Plexos) coupled with a strong enthusiasm for the energy transition
  • Ambition to work in a fast-paced, result-oriented team with steep learning curve and strong commitment to coaching and development
  • Proven record of leadership in a work setting and/or through extracurricular activities
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively with people at all levels in an organization
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English
