A Brief Summary of This Position This position is responsible for Quality Control (QC) supervision and execution of both internal and external inspections, internal and external audits, and creation, revision, and enforcement of Quality Management System (QMS) procedures and specifications. In addition, this position works with vendors, customers, 3rd party auditors and personnel from various departments and locations within Valmont to identify and develop quality control action plans and procedures. This position is responsible for the supervision of all NDT Inspectors on both shifts. The quality department ensures that product meets or exceeds the expectations of the customer and complies with standards for all national or international regulating bodies, and Valmont Industries, Inc.’s own internal Quality standards. In addition, this position aids the Site Leadership in identifying opportunities for improvement regarding both internal and external suppliers and customers for products and processes. Works to identify and develop quality improvement policies and action plans based on those findings. Important Details about the Role Hire, supervise and professionally develop NDT Technicians within the Quality Control Department. Help develop procedures and work instructions for inspection of various manufactured and purchased products in conjunction with QC Technical Coordinators, Customer Requirements, Engineering, and Drafting. Enforce procedures and work instructions for inspection of various manufactured and purchased products. Observe operating activities throughout all product areas; making recommendations, developing action plans and following up to ensure that action plans are effectively implemented. Represent the Quality department on task forces committees related to continuous improvement activities. Conduct internal quality audit of individual departments and other division locations. Assist department supervisors in evaluating field problem data and develop corrective action plans to prevent reoccurrence of problems. Analyze/evaluate manufacturing processes to identify improvement opportunities and review new processes for possible integration into systems. Perform data gathering, analysis, and distribution of all quality related data. Assist Site Leadership in implementing and maintaining both the site and division QMS and continuous improvement activities. Other duties as assigned. Job Knowledge This person must have knowledge of NDT techniques, practices and disciplines. Knowledge level must be sufficient to develop and write NDT procedures in accordance with applicable codes and specifications. Must be familiar with different welding, processing, and finishing procedures for all products produced in the division. This person must be capable of reading and interpreting production prints, production order packets, quality instructions and specifications utilized in the processing and production of products. This person must be capable of using precision measuring equipment (i.e., micrometers, calipers, plug gauges, etc.), calculator, personal computer and non-destructive test equipment. The incumbent must have a thorough working knowledge of an AISC Quality System. The knowledge and training should be sufficient to conduct internal quality audits and review written documentation. Interpersonal Skills The incumbent works closely with production personnel, administrative personnel, other quality assurance personnel, vendors, customers, and customer liaison inspectors to interpret, understand, and be able to articulate quality standards and procedures back to any of the aforementioned groups. The incumbent must possess the ability to communicate effectively and convincingly to all divisional personnel, vendors, customers and their agents. Communication comes in the form of conversations, memorandum, and reports. Ability to interact with every potential level within the hierarchy of Valmont, our customers, and intermediaries is paramount. Equipment Operated Diameter tapes, micrometers, data gathering devices, personal computers, snap gauges, calipers, non- destructive testing instruments, inclinometers, mil thickness gauges and other quality control measurements devices. Moderate PC knowledge, especially the Microsoft Office Suite of programs is required. Decision Making The incumbent must be capable of distinguishing conforming and non-conforming quality. It is imperative that the person is capable of reading, comprehending and properly interpreting specifications from both internal and external sources. Judgments will be made on a regular basis and must be done consistently and accurately. The incumbent will be required to make decisions regarding the quality of products and processes on a regular basis. It is essential for this person to make uncompromising decisions consistent with the applicable customer, industry, and company specifications. Results of Action Audits and inspections are required to ensure proper adherence to specifications and timely processing of materials to meet customer demands. However, uncompromising attention must be given to correcting identified nonconformities and ensuring that action plans are implemented and followed. This person has a major impact on the steps required to eliminate the shipment of non-conforming goods to customers and to initiate corrective action plans to reduce and eventually eliminate the generation of internal scrap and rework expenses. Organizational Setting This position reports into Quality Manager and has approximately 8 direct reports . This role requires up to 15% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays. Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 years of quality control experience, OR Associate degree with at least 2 years of quality control experience, OR At least 4 years of quality control experience Excellent leadership, problem solving, planning, customer service, and written and verbal communication skills. AWS CWI certification Proficient in Microsoft Office programs Knowledgeable about welding inspection, coating inspection, and non-destructive testing Knowledgeable about basic quality tools, such as a pareto chart, a fishbone diagram, and root cause analysis Knowledgeable about steel fabrication operations, such as thermal cutting, forming, welding, painting, galvanizing, and non-destructive testing Able to work independently with minimal supervision. Able to make informed, rational, data-driven decisions. Able to persuade and motivate others. Able to interpret codes and standards, shop drawings, and specifications. Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications Previous quality control supervisory experience in an AISC-certified heavy fabrication environment Basic understanding of statistical process control and process capability SNT-TC-1A VT Level II, MT Level II, and UT Level II certifications NACE CIP Level I certification Certification as a quality manager, auditor, or quality engineer (e.g. ASQ CMQ/OE, CQA, or ASQ CQE) Formal Lean Six Sigma training or experience leading Lean Six Sigma projects Working Environment and Physical Efforts This role will include frequent exposure to extreme heat and cold, etc. working both indoor and outdoor You will be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. This role includes both indoor and outdoor work in all seasons and requires extended periods of time standing/walking.
