The Air Force Research Laboratory’s Nuclear Mission Branch (AFRL/RVBN) seeks a highly motivated and experienced mid- to senior-level engineering or science professional to lead the development, assembly, and testing of a next-generation re-entry vehicle testbed in support of nuclear deterrence operations objectives.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead re-entry government reference design (GRD) testbed development efforts within AFRL/RVBN for flight representative testing and environments for re-entry systems
- Define technical content for reentry testbed design and development and work directly with development organizations to ensure testbed deliveries meet AFRL needs for advancing nuclear-related components and technologies in support of the nuclear enterprise.
- Interface with programmatic and financial team members to accurately capture development efforts in terms of milestones, obligations, and expenditures.
- Lead research and/or other professional and scientific efforts to ensure quality and relevant technical oversight and personal contribution related to nuclear re-entry systems.
- Lead system-level technical requirements' development, management, and control and conduct trade studies to balance technical performance trade-offs with cost, schedule, and risk to achieve mission needs.
- Lead integration of inputs and coordinating responsibilities among multiple agencies, including AFRL, AFNWC, AFGSC, Navy, MDA, and the NNSA national laboratories and serve as primary interface among RVBN, stakeholders, contractors, end-users, suppliers, and test organizations with regard to the GRD effort.
- Lead Integrated Product Teams consisting of aerothermal, avionics, systems engineering, flight safety, mechanical, software, qualification and testing, and payloads professionals to meet mission needs.
- Ensure deliverables are met with a high degree of quality, compliance, and safety.
- Foster collaboration with DOD partners and stakeholders as well as DOE/NNSA National laboratories.

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or related technical field from an accredited academic institution
- A minimum of one year of specialized experience that equipped the candidate to perform the duties of the position
- Demonstrated experience leading technical or engineering efforts of large, complex assembly, research, and/or development programs
- Knowledge of project management tools and techniques, project work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, budget management, and project control
- Familiarity with relevant classification guidance and demonstrated commitment to USAF goals in upholding safeguards for classified information
- Applicants must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain, a DOD TS/SCI clearance
Desired Qualifications
- Ten (10) or more years of leadership or personnel management in relevant high-consequence operational environments
- Experience leading technical or systems engineering efforts associated with nuclear weapon programs
- Effective communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills, necessary to present, explain, and advise management and/or external sponsors
- Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with personnel from external entities
- Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities
- Familiarity with basic principles associated with the design, development, qualification, certification, assembly, production, surveillance, and/or testing of nuclear components or systems
- Experience with stockpile activities such as Life Extension Programs, (LEP), Alterations, Joint Test Assemblies (JTA), development testing, and/or assembly operations in development or War Reserve settings
