ENVIRONMENTAL INSPECTOR

To inspects various locations throughout the District to reduce or eliminate potential health hazards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducts inspections of assigned buildings, reports potential hazards and acts as project manager to mitigate hazards.
  • Responds to emergency environmental concerns and secures area, determines extent of problem and remediating problem if possible, notifies appropriate personnel and assists in evacuations if the situation warrants.
  • Oversees projects activities which includes collecting samples and information for the scope of work, pre-walk throughs with contractors, design layout, on-site quality control and inspection until completion of project.
  • Provides inspection support including air monitoring, sample collection, contract management pertaining to asbestos, lead, radon and safe drinking water programs.
  • Collects monthly water and waste water samples and submits reports to supervisor.
  • Conducts site investigations of Phase I assessments prior to land purchases.
  • Conducts indoor air quality investigations.
  • Identifies friable and non-friable asbestos-containing material as regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act.
  • Maintains written assessments of all known or assumed friable asbestos-containing bulk materials in accordance with the Federal Asbestos Regulations.
  • Updates drawings on asbestos locations or abatement projects to be given to drafter.
  • Coordinates project management of asbestos abatement projects and renovation projects.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Secondary course work in an Environmental field.
  • Asbestos certificate (contractor / supervisor, inspector, management planner or project designer)
  • Two of the following certificates / licenses: air quality, hazardous materials, water systems, wastewater systems, lead or other environmental related areas; or the ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making, team building and problem solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of word processing, database and spreadsheet software.
  • Knowledge of EPA, OSHA, AHERA, DOT, NESHAPs, SDWA, GWPA regulations for each discipline, industrial safety practices and procedures concerning water quality, indoor air quality, radon, lead based paint, asbestos hazards and confined space entry.
  • Knowledge of heating, ventilation and air conditioning; plumbing; construction terminology and building materials.
  • Knowledge in environmental assessments related to the safety and health of the school population.
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring and sampling devices.
  • Ability to maintain and calibrate toxic and combustible gas monitors, O2, CO and Co2 meters.
  • Ability to investigate and identify potential hazards and contain areas until abatement or mitigation is accomplished.
  • Ability to prepare and present concise written reports.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Four years of experience in the Environmental field or related field.
