We have a wonderful new job opportunity for a Research Technologist II. The incumbent will perform activities in the Adili Lab involves working with a team to study blood clotting.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
- The responsibilities for this position involve isolating platelets from both humans and mice to perform experimental techniques, especially those related to platelets, thrombosis, and bleeding.
- Perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, restriction digests, agarose gels, platelet functional analysis with flow cytometry and aggregation, and in vitro clot assays as part of a team. Maintain mouse colonies.
- Maintains up-to-date inventory of animals and provides investigators with animal colony production and availability for short and long-term projects.
- Performs technical procedures, including administering anesthesia, ear tagging, injections, blood collections, breeding functions (weaning, sexing, etc.), and tissue collections.
- Performing microsurgery on small animals and intravital microscopic imaging of thrombosis models
- Working interactively and collegially with other members of the laboratory.
- Participating in laboratory meetings.
- Comply with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as written.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience in animal handling, rodent breeding colony management and associated procedures.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills, including word processing, database and spreadsheet management, email, and Internet.
- Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- A bachelor's degree in a related field, with a minimum of 1-2 years of research experience utilizing animal handling or equivalent education and experience. Experience in animal handling, rodent breeding colony management, and associated procedures
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills, including word processing, database and spreadsheet management, email, and Internet.
- Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Research technicians can also receive training in the microsurgical skills required for animal models in the lab.
- Experience with blood research and specialized laboratory skills using fine surgical approaches in small animal models of thrombosis and hemostasis using intravital microscopy would be preferred.
• Required mental activities include continuous use of the ability to read, speak, write, and understand English; Required mental activities used less frequently include decision making, interpersonal skills, teamwork, creativity, use of discretion, problem analysis, independent judgment and/or independent action, and the ability to perform basic Math (used frequently); mentoring, presentations/teaching, training/supervising, and the ability to perform basic programming (used occasionally); customer service and the ability to perform advanced Math (used rarely).
• Required physical activities used frequently include standing, hearing, walking, sitting, talking, reaching, feeling, handling and repetitive motions of hands/wrists (used frequently); stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and repetitive motions of feet (used occasionally).
• The ability to push, pull and lift an average of 20-50 pounds throughout the day is required, as is the ability to carry an average of 10-20 pounds throughout the day.
• Job skills related to specific job functions include frequent use of a hand-held pipette, sampling handling with proper aseptic technique while working in a laminar flow hood, flow cytometry, and animal handling.
• The project will utilize the following equipment located in the lab: 1) aggregometry, 3) flow cytometry, 4) western blot electrophoresis, 5) PCR, 6) Hemavet, and 6) thromboelastography 7) Intravital microscopy imaging,
• Responsibilities include executing and recording laboratory experiments, applying standard scientific protocols to experiments and research, improving current methods, and evaluating innovative techniques.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position will require a flexible schedule including occasional evening and weekend work hours.
- Exposed to aerosol dangers from animals and may require the use of supportive equipment for breathing if in the Vivarium.
- This position has direct exposure to blood-borne pathogens and requires work with human and animal blood and tissue samples and non-pathogenic viruses.
