About the Opportunity
The GEAR UP Program Coordinator reports to the Director of GEAR UP NC. This position will primarily be responsible
for coordinating large and small GEAR UP events, in partnership with GEAR UP and UNC System Office partners. This
will include coordinating and communicating event details, maintain event documentation, arrange catered meals,
agendas, etc. This position will also manage GEAR UP social media presence across multiple platforms, create, edit,
produce and post various forms of digital content including information graphics, audio, video, and newsletters.
Additionally, the role must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. It is essential that this position
work independently, as well as in a team-based environment. The ability to adapt to constantly evolving priorities, to
effectively communicate instructions with individuals, to exercise sound judgement, and to work with confidential
materials are critical qualities.
This position is time-limited with an expected end date of August 2026.
This position is expected to work on-site at least three days per week consistent with System Office policy. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station. About the UNC System Office The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press. About the Team The Strategy and Policy division is charged with enhancing and furthering the UNC System's strategic goals. The division partners with the President and chancellors on System-wide strategic initiatives, is responsible for the institutional performance measurement framework, and serves as a higher-education policy expert to the President, the Board of Governors, and the NC General Assembly. The division also tracks and assesses state and national trends in higher education, and their likely impact on the UNC System, and proactively identifies new initiatives to support System strategies. The division also provides oversight of the University and P12 Partnerships unit as well as the GEAR UP Program. Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a national college access initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant is designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education by providing support services in eligible economically disadvantaged communities. GEAR UP North Carolina is a seven-year (2019-26), $25.7 million grant administered by the UNC System Office and operates as a unit within the Strategy & Policy Division. Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Required Competencies A working knowledge of the policies and practices of the UNC System are not essential at the time of hire but must be developed and acquired quickly. Strong prioritization and organization skills are necessary for multitasking, as well as for coordinating projects and activities. *Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of programs and applications is required, as is proficiency with at least one calendaring application. *Website management experience. *Large event and conference planning experience, both in-person and virtual.
