Descriptive Title: Clinical Instructor - Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for Stony Brook Cancer Center
Department: Medicine - Division of Hematology & Oncology
Responsibilities & Requirements: The APP will report to the Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology. Responsibilities may include all or some of the following:
- Independently assess and evaluate follow up solid tumor patients at the outpatient clinic of Stony Brook Cancer Center.
- Perform physical exams and procedures related to patient participation on clinical trials.
- Present, discuss, and consent patients to appropriate clinical trials.
- Review, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding laboratory findings for patients.
- Manage complications of chemotherapy including writing chemotherapy orders.
- Manage outpatient phone calls including toxicity assessments and recommendations.
- Follow-up with patients regarding laboratory and radiology tests by telephone or in person.
- Provide coverage and management for sick walk-ins.
- Educate patients and family members regarding breast cancer management and treatment.
- Assist in transition of care planning.
- Provide survivorship and long-term follow-up for cancer patients.
- Demonstrate skills in collaboration, teamwork and problem solving to achieve goals.
- Knowledge of basic software packages and hospital information systems (EMR).
- Additional responsibilities may also be required as the position evolves over time.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Current NYS RN license, Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in nursing, and NYS license and certification as an adult and/or family nurse practitioner OR Physician Assistant's degree with NYS License and certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the management and treatment of cancer and hematology patients. Excellent communication skills. Experience with solid tumor patients.
