This position includes:
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Under direct supervision, coordinates all aspects of the patient insurance and benefit plans, adhering to established timelines and departmental procedures.

EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
One year of medical insurance claims experience through patient accounts billing or claims adjudication.
KNOWLEDGE:
Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and basic anatomy/physiology.
Demonstrated computer skills.
Knowledge of how to use office equipment, including phone and computer.
Knowledge of customer service concepts and techniques.
SKILLS:
Skill in operating a computer and copy machine.
Skill in answering the telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner and using a multi-line telephone system.
ABILITIES:
Ability to understand patient benefits, calculate patient responsibility and collect payments.
Ability to communicate clearly in person and on the phone, and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively.
Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions and file correctly by alphabetic or numeric systems.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time. Occasional stress related to dealing with patient problems and workload. Light lifting (less than 10 pounds). Manual dexterity for using a computer keyboard.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Office setting, well lit and ventilated. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. Contact involves dealing with vulnerable populations (i.e., elderly, ill and injured) in a compassionate and patient manner.
EXPOSURE DETERMINATION TO BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS:
Category III: Classification in which employee has no occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Under direct supervision, coordinates all aspects of the patient insurance and benefit plans, adhering to established timelines and departmental procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures all insurance and authorization information, referral forms, and required documentation are complete; verifies that all pre-authorizations, registrations, and other insurance related documents are completed.
- Gathers pertinent information from insurance carriers, financial counselors, or other staff to determine financial responsibility, verifies referral authorization from insurance carriers and relays such authorizations (or denials) to the patient and the provider.
- Determines patient responsibility, registration, or other referral-related issues prior to a patient's appointment.
- Responds to incoming telephone calls regarding current billing questions and responds to voice mail messages in a timely manner.
- Maintains a positive and professional tone in all verbal, nonverbal and written communications with patients, physician offices, and colleagues.
- Ensures accurate and timely communication with patients, providers, and other staff.
- Maintains updated daily payment encounter log.
- Performs daily balance and deposit.
- Follows HIPAA guidelines in handling patient information.
- Updates patient information, collects co-pays, provides any necessary forms that need to be completed, and obtains signatures as necessary.
- Assist in other areas as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
