The Academic Department Chair will be broadly responsible for the administration of strategic, academic, and clinical initiatives within the Department of Preventive, Occupational, and Environmental Medicine. The Chair will be responsible for the assurance of excellence in community engagement, education, and research within their department, as well as for partnership with UT Health East Texas system leaders in the delivery of top-quality clinical care (where applicable). Participates in hospital committee functions and administrative duties as assigned. Provides education and training to residents, medical students, and other trainees, as well as collaborates across UT Tyler colleges, schools, and departments for purposes of instruction and research where applicable. Participates in research and outreach activities. The Chair has administrative responsibility for the Department and provides professional leadership for its activities. This academic faculty role is hired at the Professor or Associate Professor rank, depending on education and experience. About this Department Chair Job Opening: * Supporting and contributing to the mission of the School; establishing a vision for the department. * Demonstrating scholarship and pursuing excellence in their discipline, by providing leadership and mentorship of the Department in a robust scholarly and/or research program. This includes the development and promotion of sponsored research funding, project proposals, and scholarly work products, as well as providing administrative support to established and ongoing departmental scholarly projects, centers, institutes, training grants, and related research initiatives by faculty, students, and others. * Providing administrative oversight and direction and annual performance review of all direct-reporting faculty and staff within department with timely and constructive feedback. This includes administering other departmental human resource and supervisory responsibilities consistent with established policies and practices and with principles of fairness, rationality, and due process * Collaborating with advisement from the Division Chiefs regarding decisions that involve faculty involvement to more effectively lead the Department. * Participating with the Dean, the Division Chiefs, the department faculty, and the Budget Advisory Group, on annual budgetary planning, including fair and equitable resource allocation to support the full breadth of department activities. * Monitoring departmental account expenditures and reconciliations. * Supporting and mentoring the faculty throughout their careers as educators, scientists, healthcare providers and academic leaders and facilitating their professional development. * Collaborating with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development and the Vice Dean for same with respect to recommending and support of faculty in the review and consideration process for appointment, promotion, tenure. * Collaborating with the Associate Dean for Belonging and Community Engagement to advance the university s representative community engagement priorities and to ensure that processes are in place to monitor the effectiveness of current recruitment strategies. * Creating fair and equitable work conditions; nurturing an environment of professionalism, accountability, respect, and acceptance; and promoting open discussion, transparent communication, and shared governance in regular faculty/departmental meetings. * Ensuring departmental compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, as well as University Policies and Procedures. * Conducting other administrative duties and participating in committee functions and university governance as assigned. * Providing oversight, in conjunction with the Department of Medical Education leadership and the Graduate Medical Education infrastructure, for the educational programs and leaders (e.g., Program Directors, Clerkship Directors, etc.) within the Department. * Providing and administering teaching and education to residents, graduate students, medical students, staff and other participants in departmental educational programs through lectures, didactics, and supervision in practicum settings. * Assisting in the expansion of education and training programs. * Serving as consultant on issues related to the specialty foci of the Department of Preventive, Occupational, and Environmental Medicine where applicable. * Assisting in the expansion of the patient base by participating in approved marketing activities with employers, workers, other population groups, public health, environmental health, lifestyle medicine, and other related preventive initiatives in the region. * Providing high quality, cost-effective, compassionate preventive, occupational, and environmental medical care and health services consistent with scope of training and credentialing to program clients, and at a level commensurate with effort allocation as determined by the Dean. This allocation will be reviewed annually in consultation with the Dean and balanced with the administrative, outreach, educational, and research components and resourcing of the position. * Developing goals and objectives for the Department and preparing progress reports as directed. * Supporting staff, assisting in troubleshooting and resolving issues, and assuring the department runs effectively and efficiently. * Fostering the regional, national and international reputation of the School and Department. * Attending meetings of the Dean s Executive Cabinet and the Council of Chairs. Minimum Qualifications: * ABPM board certification * Track record of 3+ years effective administrative/leadership responsibility in preventative, occupational and environmental medicine, including experience and success in research, education, clinical practice, and clinical administration. * Record of and/or participation in extramural funded clinical and/or public health research. * Ability to balance and excel in the missions of education, research, and clinical care. * Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of academic medicine in the dynamic world of healthcare. * Success in building, implementing, expanding and elevating programs with vision and collaborative team spirit. * Knowledge of creating and managing budgets * Track record of clinical activities in at least three of the last five years.
