National Grid is hiring a Director, Business Development. This position is located in Brooklyn, NY.
Job Purpose
The Business Development Director (BDD) will lead the creation of creative commercial strategies to manage existing generation assets and develop and deliver new clean energy infrastructure across the US NE. The role will primarily focus on supporting commercial outcomes for the Long Island generation assets and other clean energy opportunities related to the existing generation business, including, but not limited to solar, battery energy storage, hydrogen etc. This includes commercial negotiation and management of existing and future purchase power agreements. The BDD will also be responsible for the development, commercial evaluation and structuring of new infrastructure projects and their underlying business cases to ensure adequate returns and risk mitigations for capital investment by NGV. This role requires being at the forefront of wholesale energy market development including being active in shaping policies that can impact the future of the energy market and provide benefit to existing and future NGV commercial strategies. The role also requires close collaboration and coordination with the technical Ops teams that physically operate the assets to ensure operational parameters are taken into consideration. Additionally, the BDD will work closely with inhouse engineering teams in support of the development of new infrastructure opportunities. The BDD will also support NGV NE's existing and future joint venture partnerships and other customer commercial transactions.
The BDD will be a member of the Chief Commercial Officer's leadership team and work across the NGV and National Grid organization, working closely with other internal stakeholder groups such as Treasury, Finance, Portfolio Management, Government Affairs etc. The role requires successful external and internal stakeholder management and will also work closely with the Chief Operating Officer of NGV NE's team who is responsible for providing oversight over the prudent and safe operational management of the NGV NE assets during construction and operation which include generation, solar, battery energy storage and LNG facilities.
The overall goal of this team-oriented role will be to enhance the company's ability to commercialize, develop and deliver competitive clean energy projects in the U.S. Northeast to meet company energy transition objectives.
Key Accountabilities •Overall responsibility for commercial project development and delivery as a member of the management team of NGV Chief Commercial Officer team and the broader NG/NGV team delivering our clean energy transition goal in the US Northeast working closely with all shareholders, suppliers, technical and commercial teams. •Utilize market, competitor, and customer intelligence to support the origination of potential clean energy growth opportunities related to NGV's existing asset base and corporate strategy. •Lead workstreams around valuation and commercial impact analyses of emerging investments and/or RfP (Request for Proposal) opportunities (as needed) •Lead the development and/or coordinate with JV partners in the development of projects. •Support the commercial negotiation of contracts as key member of negotiation teams. •Gather and prepare information on projects to facilitate risk evaluation and decision-making. •Participate and interact in strategic meetings, presenting and discussing with the business, NG Executives, JV Board(s) where relevant; including in support of corporate investment decisions. •Monitor and manage emerging industry policies and developments, working with stakeholder engagement teams, corporate affairs and external participants, as needed, to influence and steer towards desired or favorable NG/NGV outcomes.
Qualifications •Minimum: Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of relevant work experience in energy infrastructure developments, policies and/or energy industry, leading complex projects. •Experience negotiating market-based Purchase Power Agreements •Knowledge and/or experience with wholesale energy market hedging instruments •Preference, but not requirement, for undergraduate or graduate engineering or business degrees. •Experience in working closely with company officers, holding a position of authority, command and trust within a project team or like environment. •Experience working with various areas of legal requirements, such real estate, regulatory filings, commercial arrangements, supplier contracts and other, is highly desirable. •Detail-oriented, quantitative & analytical skills, team-player, with solid communication skills •Experience working with or in the power sector or delivering of large infrastructure projects •Advanced writing/power point story-telling skills highly desirable •Knowledge of US power industry trends across multiple technologies, competitive landscape in generation and transmission development is required. •Knowledge of federal & NY/NJ/NE state siting processes, ISO (NYISO, PJM, NEISO) processes and policies is very highly desirable. Additional knowledge in project labor and workforce agreements are a plus.
