Job Title: Family Services Specialist I 
Job Locations: City of Virginia Beach, Department of Human Services    
Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
Pay Rate: $22.87/hourly. 

Overview:
The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking an experienced Family Services Specialist I. This position is primarily responsible for answering calls from the Adult Services (AS)/ Adult
Protective Services (APS) hotline to appropriately screen APS referrals from the community for investigation.

Job Duties:

• Experience with AS/APS criteria for report validity, jurisdiction and risk factors with the ability to determine when a report is an emergency requiring immediate response.
• Effectively apply appropriate local, state and federal policy guidelines to all screening, intake, investigation and crisis intervention contacts.
• Comprehensive knowledge of community resources to make appropriate referrals for clients.
• Prepares statistical reports to document services provided and unmet needs.
• Computer skills in Internet search, ASAPS, Peer Place, Outlook, MS Word, Excel and Power Point required.
• Ensures that client needs are adequately assessed during intake call, providing information and referrals as needed, connecting seniors and other professionals to resources as requested.
• Assessing client needs by conducting field visits as required and linking clients to financial resources within the agency as appropriate.
• Ability to work within the philosophy of least restrictive alternative/adult autonomy for capable adult clients.

Requirements:

• Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a human services field (social work, counseling, gerontology, guidance and counseling, family and child development, psychology or sociology); or possess a bachelor’s degree in any field accompanied by a minimum of two (2) years related experience in a human services area. 
• Must have a valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license.
