Job Title: Family Services Assistant 
Job Locations: City of Virginia Beach, Department of Human Services         
Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
Pay Rate: $15.48/hourly

Overview: 
Assist and instruct clients in daily maintenance and use of community resources; reinforce and support clients in attaining treatment goals as set up by client and Family Services Specialist; takes active role in instructing parents in child growth and development as part of the service plans; monitors cases and assists in parenting or support groups; transport children within the City and when necessary throughout the country; and support and assist Family Services Specialist in delivering and implementing treatment plans with clients.

Job Duties:

• Reinforce and support the family intervention methods instituted by the Family Services Specialist to assist clients in meeting individual goals. 
• Plan and direct goal-oriented visitation between natural parents and foster children to accomplish service plan goals. 
• Assist clients in filling out necessary financial assistance forms to use as a basis for determining eligibility for services. 
• Teach clients parenting skills and how to do comparison shopping; and help clients meet medical needs and secure housing and/or employment to help the client attain self-sufficiency skills. 
• Assist handicapped and geriatric clients for them to be maintained in their own homes. 
• Offer short-term emergency day care services to ensure continued employment of clients. 
• Monitor progress of child abuse/neglect cases to meet the needs of child protective services cases and ensure safety of the child. 
• Provide transportation to assist in placing foster children in residential placements to free Family Services Specialists for other tasks. 
• Schedule appointments in efficient manner.
• Skill in instructing others in basic daily living tasks, i.e., parenting skills and child management, special needs for handicapped and geriatric clients, comparison shopping making and keeping medical appointments, how to look for housing and employment, utilizing community resources. 
• Skill in maintaining an effective working relationship with clients, staff and other professionals at a local level.
• Skilled in verbal and written communications.     

Requirements:

• Requires any combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in human services field (social work, guidance and counseling, family and child development, psychology or sociology) utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 
• Must have or obtain a valid Virginia or North Caroline driver’s license in accordance with Virginia and North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
